Number Plates
« on: 12 March 2010, 19:04:46 »

What's the biggest issue I could come across if I got my plates on the BM spaced differently (Only for show of course), see the last two letter are my first 2 initials, and the first 2 letters and number are YE5, so it looks like YES, lucky find the car and plate really.

Police pulling you, and MOT failure, are just two I can think of.

I have a VX logo on mine, on the left side, so minor mod.
I just put the old ones back on come MOT time, just in case. :y

afaik its illegal but you see it everywhere and i dont think the police can be bothered half the time but if they did i havent a clue what the outcome would be..the plate has to have a dealers name on it or shop name and you can have a postcode but no phone number iirc

They would have my company name on the bottom with postcode, no BS number though which is what worries me, as to the spacing police around here have never pulled a mate of mine whose are worse than what I's like, but thats pot luck. I do keep all the original plates too, but MOT is in november and the car will be long gone by then. Anyway chance of points etc as the mrs. will be driving it I can imagine the stick I'd get for her getting points  :-[

Cheers  :y

No chance of points unless they're really upset with you  >:(

Worst case is a VDRS, defect sheet - 14 days to rectify and whatever the MOT garage charge to stamp the ticket. (was about £3.50  years ago)  :y

I have been driving on illegally spaced, illegal font plates for the last 6 months with no problem at all....

Work next door to a police traffic dept with Rozzer mobiles driving past my car parked on the road daily and have never had any trouble at all.....

As mentioned previously, I swap back to original and legal plates for MOT then back to these.....

Coppers dont seem bothered anymore

You've been quite lucky then, the Met and TVP are especially hot on this topic currently.
Drive through London or TVP, and you will undoubtedly get stopped. I never get the fascination with intentionally misrepresenting plates.
I took in an old Volvo 850 in p/x for the RR, it had ilegal plates. He was a nice guy, but said to him...I'm not even going to entertain the idea of taking this car in with those plates so he went to Halfords and got a new set.
Del, I assume by now you've got Trade Plates...is this BMW yours, or 'in trade' and is it taxed?
If in trade don't even think about it, you'll have hell and it isn't worth it. They need to have a BSAU number, and if you sell the car you must make sure it conforms, if not and the purchaser gets stopped it could, and may well come back to you.
Personally, I don't think it's worth the risk.

Keep you old plates in the boot ... just incase, and Plod might be a bit more lenient. A bloke at work had M4LC V on his car and was pulled. Plod pulled him for the plates but were a bit more forgiving when they saw the proper spaced plates in the boot, but told him in no uncertain terms that they wouldn't be again if they saw the incorrect plates on his car ever again!

Nope BM is registered to me. Wouldn't flog one 'In the Trade' with illegal bits on, don't like comebacks. Still need to get trade Insurance sorted, luckily all other cars that I've got for sale are stored off road at the moment  :y
