Yellow Gunk on the Oil Cap?
« on: 22 March 2010, 14:57:36 »

Was checking my oil at the weekend and found this when I took the cap off!

I initially filled my trousers  :-/ but then realised that my water level was fine.

So, Not Head Gasket. Phew!!

A friend told me that this can happen with the cold weather and its caused by the condensation etc.

Is this true? Do I have anything to worry about?

Cheers  :y

100% correct its because the filler neck is so far away from any real heat and it fill the neck with the gunk you have

so dont worry  :y :y :y

Do you do a lot of short journeys as this appears to be one cause.

Yes if 5 miles can be classed as a short journey. Daily routine is 5 miles each way to work & back then about the same dropping girlfriend off at work each day.  :y

Richard, cheat like I did on my last V6. Remove the neck, lift the small tab over the cam cover bolt and twist anti-clockwise, then clean it. Then throw the thing in the boot cubby and refit the cap directly to the cam cover! Just pop it back on when you need to top up or use a funnel :y

Frequent oil changes can cure the problem. Check your breathers as they are bound to be in the same condition and will need cleaning out.

They do this on short journeys mate, plus the condensation & removing the filler are true. Get a knife, scoop it out & spread it in your sarnies, saves on mayo.
Compliments the cheese board as well ...Hic!!! 8-) :y
