Rover 75 oil cooler (auto)...is it needed

I have a mate who has a rover 75 2.0cdt automatic,the oil cooler at the front of the vehicle is busted,is this oil cooler for the auto box?? can it run ok if i just join the pipes going in.He is getting rid of the car soon and doesnt want to spend alot.Cheers...
Also the car is very smoky

The answer is yes it is!

From memory, there are 2 oil coolers on these one for gearbox and one for the engine.
