Thanks,

That I'll have to double check. One of them is on 03 plate petrol (not sure if it is the 1.6 or 1.8). The water pump failed and caused the recently changed cam-belt to fail as well. They are now on holiday having been told by Vauxhall it will cost them £4000 for a new engine. I'm thinking a recon engine should be less than that. Also is it possible to just change the head - how can you tell if there is any damage to the pistons?

Cheers,

Rob.

As per any engine with a cambelt failure, you can more often than not change just the head.

This is a classic example of why we ALWAYS say, change the water pump on the 4 pots with the cambelt setup.

As a guide for head only, I reacon I could do the lot for under 500 quid with new cambelt kit and water pump, fluids, valves, head re-furbed, guides where required etc.

What I cant remember is how much the Vx engines are, sub 2 Grand from memory

Cheers. Is that an offer to do the work, or a guide to the cost they should be looking at paying? I'll get in touch with them when they get back from holiday. They'll be pleased that they aren't likely to have to pay the £4000 quoted by Vauxhall!

Just for reference the VXPRO engine prices for the Zafira are;
1.6 Z16XE R1000154D Trade Price £1,039
Then there's the twinport one which is the same price
1.8 Z18XE Trade Price is £1,298.
These are engines direct from Vauxhall which have been rebuilt with new parts and are like brand new, they even come with a 2 year warranty.

My friend is getting a quote from a garage (not Vauxhall) for about £700 plus labour. It is from a written off vehicle apparantly. Is there anything he should ask about this engine. It is with a 2 month warranty. Vauxhall did an inspection of the engine and say that it is more than just a new head - pistons damaged (plus a long list of things he can't remember).

Yes, why is it so overpriced for a second hand engine!

Thanks. By the way after my full geo I still have a lot of tramlining and 'random' pulls to the left, so I'm guessing the steering idler is at fault (when I came over you said it was going to need some attention). I'm hoping to get some time on Sat to have a go at replacing it.
