lpg
« on: 14 April 2010, 11:03:37 »

It may be a stupid question but why dont the car makers make an lpg car that only runs on lpg. It may already be done but ive never heard of one. It just seems weird to me.

LPG does not run well stone cold, needs to be little bit warm. Also no way near enough LPG stations

It's not that hard to make an LPG engine run well from cold. The main reason converted vehicles run like a dog when started on LPG is that the petrol ECU is adding enrichments that are not required by LPG.

Mixer systems are better in this respect because they don't piggy back off the main ECU!

The vapouriser might not be able to deliver enough vapour for constant running under full load from stone cold but it's good practice not to subject a cold engine to that in any case.

I suspect the sparseness of LPG filling stations and the lack of a market for such a vehicle is the main reason. It's less easy to set off with a can for fuel if you run out, too, although I guess they could provide a connection for a calor gas cylinder for emergencies. ;D

Correct me if I'm wrong, Kev, but HONDA did produce a version of its LEGEND model in Japan only that was LPG only. It sold poorly, and was stopped after only 40 something were sold in a whole year. Read that somewhere on the web, will look again to see if I can find it. Had a connection for a remote propane tank in the boot with a "camping gaz" style of connector for the times you "run out", but it was no dearer than the petrol version to buy, and had a heater thingy in the line for startup although it was a total flop for Honda.
