What would you do next?
« on: 16 April 2010, 12:24:53 »

I really need some honest opinions here guys and girls.

As some of you know I have recently had to do a lot of work to my car - cambelt kit and waterpump was first, followed by oil cooler and then most recently head gaskets and a set of rear brake pads to get through the MOT.

The car is a 1998 3.0 MV6 manual (not ex plod). It now has a 12 month MOT. The wheels need a refurb and there is a scratch all down the drivers side where some scrote has keyed it and a small rust patch on the passenger side back door. It will also need the door hinges doing on both front doors and there are some other bits and pieces of bodywork that need tidying. The interior is full leather recaros and is clean and tidy. The aircon doesn't work (needs a regas I think) but everything else does.

Despite all the recent work the car still isn't running right. There is a fairly serious misfire at 4000 revs and the car still emits some whitesmoke under hard acceleration. There is some mayo under the oil filler cap after a 10 mile trip to the MOT station but none on the dipstick or in the header tank. Also the car continues to show fault code 46 despite a replacement solenoid on the SAI and having tried every suggestion from members to rectify.

So my dilemma is - do I spend more money trying to fix the misfire and smoking (which ultimately I am worried I will not manage to fix) or do I cut my losses sell the car and move on. What do you think it is worth? Both as it is and if it were running properly?

BTW -  I don't have room to break the car myself or I would do that as its obviously worth more in parts.

Any opinion is appreciated as I really can't decide what to do. I have had the car 3 years and love it but its probably been off the road more than it has been on it :-/ :-/

I was in this situation with my Carlton 2 years ago - It remains for you to decide how much good money you are prepared to invest in a bad situation - the car has a year's MOT, keep it running and legal for a year, then decide when it is time to cut your losses and scrap it - cosmetic repairs would be a waste of money, cars over 10 years old are always a gamble. :-/

seriously thats nothing for a miggy..

if you love the car fix it..

or if you think only feasibility the answer is obvious..

however I must say upto now I spend enough (for repairs) to buy 4-5 young miggies in UK ;D ;D so its too late for me to give up :-/

but here similiar comfort cars with newer age wil cost at least 5 times than I spend so no need for new adventures ;D

It is rather a difficult one as I am sure many of us have been in this situation ourselves.

Sometimes you can throw good money after bad on cars and wish you had spent your money on getting another. I did exactly this a few months ago >:(

Thought mark said it was your Crank Sensor? would it not be worth spending £50 odd on one? you could solve your problem :y

If I was in your shoes, I think I'd invest in one of our 'Omega Wizards' to have a look at it first.
Then if they say to repair would be worthwhile, see if you can afford to repair it.
I think it's better to invest a few quid and have to end the relationship with your Omega, than spend a fortune and end up no better off and scrapping it!!

110k miles is nowt - mine's just over 140k now, and loving it! 8-)
