Think I've made my decision for my Opel Rekord Coupe engine transplant. My Omega wont be happy but I think it's going to have to be the V6 that goes into the car.

Was having a chat with 'Monzaman' (the guy who will be performing the surgery), and he also favoured the V6.

Weighing up the 2 engines you have:

V6                                            V8
Modern technology                     Older technology
Plenty of power                          Plenty of power
Fuel economy ok                    Fuel economy poor
Injection                                    Injection or carbs
Lightweight                                Lightweight
Subtle / quiet 'ish'                      Loud & proud
I have the donor car                  I'd need to source the engine and gearbox

I'm sure there is much more I could consider but these are key points I think  :-/

Monzaman made all the points that you forum guys mentioned which was good. He didnt criticise the V8 as it really cant be; its been a fantastic engine with an amazing history. However I have the donor car (although when it becomes a donor I will need to source another one!), its a lightweight engine, more economical, more modern, and has plenty of power.

Thanks a million for all of your comments and advice with this. No doubt as I am driving home this evening and hear the roar of a V8 I will start reconsidering again!!!   :P

Excellent choice I'm sure (although you wouldn't have been unhappy with either).

The only slight headache could be engine management. Are you going to transplant the engine management system from the Omega, sorting out wiring loom and immobiliser issues, etc. on the way or are you going to change to an aftermarket system?

Stick with whats there, transfer the immobilisr ecu and key transponder over ann you only need a few extra wires to get it all running nicely.....its worth transfering the large engine multiplug over to make it easier to fit.

Thanks chaps, yes I aim to stick with what is there. Derek (AKA Monzaman) has carried out many many 3.0 24v senator engine transplants into Opel Monza's, so he is quite excited about this. He's going to use as much as possible from the Omega.

First he will take the Rekord and sort out the bodywork (master welder) and then I will get it sprayed (no bodgers I want my 15+ coats and will find out about getting it galvanised prior to the painting). Once that is done it's time for the Omega to lay down its life for its older relative. From what I understand he will use all the electrics from the Omega where possible, engine and gearbox obviously, and any other bits and pieces. Exhaust I expect will need modification which he can do too.

When I pop down to see him I will get him to register on this forum I expect he'd find it interesting although time is always an issue for him as he is so busy. My car will hopefully go to him end of July as a slow burn project while I get my garage built to accomodate it (I was planning that anyway it isnt being built especially for the Opel - thats what I tell my missus ). I reckon we will be looking towards October / November for completion of the car, maybe earlier.

I think I will aim to get another MV6 maybe an estate 3.0 or 3.2 manual.

Sounds like a good idea. I love the sound of a V8, it's unmistakable and very sporty in the right car, however it seems the engine in consideration isn't a great example of one and is trumped by the V6 in every other department. So in this case I'd be inclined towards the V6.
