Got me thinking the other day about recorded service history.
What do most others do when they self service their own Omegas or whatever about service history when they come to sell the car.
I mean, although it's been done they have no record, unless of course they fill in the service record themselves.
I have a recorded service history on the TD all but for the last 2 years. I now do my own and try to keep all receipts for proof and jot down the mileage when I last changed the oil/filters etc

What do others do?

That's a good question. I have two different approaches, one for the cars I intend to sell, and one for my own vehicles.
It can be difficult writing it in yourself, I never do this with cars I'm selling, as it can be all to easy for the potential purchaser to go...oh yeah...you've written that yourself, I don't believe it.
But for any vehicle that's mine, I do write it in and keep all receipts etc. Some people expect a service to only be carried out by a garage and want a stamp.
But, I think if you can demonstrate your knowledge of the vehicle, they believe you and are actually happier you've done the work then a garage who have just stamped the service book.

Does a 'FSH' & stamped up service book really mean anything or is it worth anything on a car that is at least 7 yrs old? A stack of receipts would be of more interest to me.

I always try and get cars with service history, but I chop and change too often to have to worry about doing things to a car. If I do have to do something I make sure I keep the recipt and write down the mileage too.

In the past, when I have done the work, I would put it in the book, no stamp, but would put in the mileage and sign it. Now, I keep all receipts in a file to pass over. To be honest with My Mig and the Galant which is about to be sold / px the value is not affected by a service history imho as they are both worth very little..

I do totally agree with you Andy, however there are some people out there who are a bit strange, and to them a stamped up serivce book is all they want.

I sold a car, and in it's service history the service was missed by 600 miles, 2 years before I had it. The potential purchaser said they 'were concerned by this'
It actually made me laugh, some people have no idea and a service book is all they want.
That's why there is a good trade in dealer stamps, Merc and Land Rover rubber stamps can cost £50...I've been offered them. It's shocking how low some people go  :-/
If I buy a newish vehicle privately, I sometimes phone the dealership to check with them.

I use spreadsheets to record all pertinent details of all work done, date, mileage, part numbers, etc., with all receipts kept in a file.


This I have done for my last three cars, so know to the penny how much has been spent on each, and when work has been carried out.

Same here - I keep all of the receipts, and once or twice have kept the removed parts. I would much rather see the receipts than the book, as they are fiddled to easily. Having said that, with my current Omega, I called the dealer that had done most of the servicing during its life and he happily confirmed all the work, and reeled off the exact jobs done on each occasion, and offered to give me copies of the receipts for the price of an SAE (VX Dealer too!)

I hung the expired head gasket from my Senator on a nail in the garage when I changed it. That must've been about 7 or 8 years ago and it's still there  :-?  :-?

I keep a note of all work carried out with mileage & dates, i keep all receipts too.
I like to do all work myself (all that i can with the tools i have) & then i know it's been done right.
