Yes mine went up from £190 on the  reminder to £205 in the post office.  That is because the rates went up in the Budget.

Yeah I've just got done......didn't read the note in red on the form, in short it says a different rate may be payable.
What rate will it rise to next year, depends on what government we have.

Why do they charge you so much?
Here in Germany its because of the emissions, all cars are put into catagories having a Diesel is very expensive, although to compensate that the price of Diesel is 20 cents per litre cheeper than petrol.The latest thing they have just thought of is environmental  zones. Each vehicle according to their emissions has to show a sticker in the windscreen with either red (lowest) through yellow to green. A little bit like the center of London, they are not charging yet, but some red sticker cars are not allowed to enter the area. You then have no other choice but to sell the car (which obviously no one wants) and get a new enviornment friendly one.

That's truly frightening!  Forcing you to scrap a perfectly legal, roadworthy car just 'cos it was built at a time when frigging the CO2 test results wasn't paramount.  Do these greenies have ANY idea how much energy it takes to make a new car to replace it?!

That would be too complicated for Irish Politicians......
Their approach is simple albeit brutal , " if you can afford a big car then you can afford a big tax levy "
They want us all driving vans or Nissan micras .
On top of the road tax we also have a wonderful thing called Vehicle Registration Tax or VRT , which is a 33.3 % levy based on the value of the car which is charged when you register a car in Ireland. It is technically Illegal and the EU fines Ireland a paltry couple of million each year but the gains outweigh the fines so the EU and Ireland are happy. This results in cars being considerably more expensive than any other EU country and although I can travel to and buy a car anywhere within the EU at local prices the sting occurs when I want to REGISTER it in Ireland , which incidently has to be done within 24 hours of it being driven into the country or it is confiscated !!!!!. That way Ireland cannot be accused of pricing cars differently as the car is the same price it is just that they charge you extra to own it , clever eh !
The peculier thing is that cars or vehicles over 30 years old are classed as vintage and attract an annual road tax of €48 . Many people over here are now looking at early eighties models that in a couple of years will be eligable and indeed I'm looking out for a good to mint early E28 BMW which in a couple of years will probably take over from my Omega and they can go **** themselves.

Just got my annual car tax bill. 176 euros. About same as last year. That is a lot compared to say a VW Golf. The local town hall sets the rates so they vary from area to area for exactly the same car!

i just went to do a Zafira on friday, bloody £130 or so!!!

the only up side, was it sold that day as planned, and whilest at the DVLA, the focus, got taxed that i had put the new engine in the other week, £64 for 6 months, hmmm, nice!
