Estate towbar fitting diagram
« on: 01 June 2010, 11:20:03 »

Been trying to fit a towbar on my miggy estate. A bit confused on how it fits, cos it has two plares that bolt onto the end plates of the towbar main spar, and cannot see where they go. Do you have to drop the tank to fit it? where do you drill the floor?

Does any body here have a diagram or fitting instructions??

(wiring no problem.........)

TIA,

Mike.

depends on what one you have mine the bumper has to come off and put the thick bar in there is 2 indents under the carpet on left and right that is were you make the holes, then bolt it on, put bumer on to make the holes for the tow ball then cut it out then put bumper back on and fit the wire in into the rear vent to the plug. the folding type is just same but no need to take off the bumper just cut out when you have fitted it.

If you can picture this....
mine has a long length of square section tube with a piece in the centre standing off at an angle with the towball flange on it, and a 4" square plate either end with holes in it. The other two plates that attach to them are different, and one is a lot bigger than the other. There are sandwich plates too, and long spaced bolts with tubes on the bolts too.
No idea of make, but VERY substantial and "heavy duty", with stainless steel bolts and nylok nuts now, and as-new condition after sandblasting and painting, may have obliterated the makers stamp..........
could do with a picture or original fitting info, or may have to take it to a professional towbar fitter for a small consideration as don't get much time these days to fettle.

I'd be careful with stainless fasteners on load bearing things such as a towbar. The original bolts are high tensile, & while it's possible to get higher tensile stainless for specific applications, those from work elsewhere will likely be softer.  :y

the way you have put it its the same as mine easy to fit, wit bit of common sense find the 2 indent in the boot, place the square bar with hole down should fit at both ends, if do drill them out to size of bolts,, take bumper off, fit plate with hole one on top and one below and bolt it down on both side, bumper off helps as you can get to both ends,, have no pic and car out at mo but thats the start. bolts are T30 16mm. should have rubber caps as it is a bit close to the exhaust.

My Estate is fitted with a Witter towbar.
In the boot it has a long top plate (19" long x 2" wide) on nearside (UK car) and on the offside (fuel tank side) it has an almost square plate (just over 5" x 4").
The long LHS fixing has 4 holes whereas the RHS plate (fuel tank area) only has two. The floor is already marked and the bumper does not need cutting at all. I did not need to remove the bumper to fit it.
Hope this helps.

if i remember right you will have to lower the exhaust silencer as the tow-bar mounting holes come out above the silencer if you are stuck and dont mind travelling to northapton i could fit it for you
