I know its a long shot but has anyone had any experience of the wiring on a trailer pulled by an American car?

Completely lost here. Putting the brake and turn wire to the same pin causd the turn signals to come on when I brake so that is obviously not correct and just putting the turn signal wires works fine but I have no brake lights on the trailer.

I have found the individual turn signal and brake wires but American Standard trailer wiring has the brake and turn wires combined on one pin. Sort of...

On the trailer there isn't a separate brake and turn signal like on the truck. Really odd. Not sure what engineer thought that would be a good idea.

Basically, if you put on the brakes both lights, left and right, on the trailer will light up. If you keep the brake on and turn on the turn signal one will stay steady on and the other will blink.

That's pretty much what happens with US cars anyway isn't it? They're only just coming around to Europe's idea of an amber indicator/turn signal.

Correct. I guess the @rse end of an american car is bereft of a separate brake signal because they are combined with the turn signals.

Is it the trailer or the car that is wired the american way?

Agreed. Not worth dicking around with it if it's just the trailer. 20 quid buys a pair of proper light clusters plus a bit of 7 core cable and a connector. Failing that buy a ready-made trailer board for roughly the same money and mount it on the back.

Its the trailer. The car is a Montero (American version of UK Shogun)

I have a diagram using 4 standard 5 pin relays and a flasher unit to get the pre-63 Morris Minor to flash the stop tail light as a turn signal at home on the PC. I'm sure it could be altered to work the other way around. Failing that, figure out the stop/tail wiring colours on the trailer and wire them to the US layout so the ambers are there on the trailer but redundant.
