Was my MD's last car, wanted to buy it cos it was so good, but they sent it for auction, and it fetched too strong money for my wallet. he loved it, and didn't want to give it back when the lease was up. Got a SAAB now,and thinks it wasn't a patch on the Jag.. (was that or an Insignia, think he picked the right one.....)
Drove it several times for a long distance (took it to Scotland more than once from Bristol) lovely car, long legged, comfortable, and drove like an armchair on wheels.
Bad points...fuel consumption (but not on lpg, so low 20s, mostly 20 on the motorway with toe down, but 26 if you drove nice and easy.....) did rust a bit, exhausts expensive, but overall a good car. I'd have one.

I would avoid the pre 2003 XJ.
Go for the X350 model (2003-2009), has stainless steel exhaust fitted, body is made of aluminium so very light which helps MPG, many less compalints about the 'CATS' system (air suspension), interior is much better. The old XJ had a cramped centre console.
I've driven both, and prefer the X350. They can also be had fairly cheaply for the early '03' or '53' plate one's.

check what system is on it? a jag should be running a fully siquential system with a "super reg" insted of the standard regulators.

Would love one, but I think they are smaller inside in the drivers area than the mig,

The 2.7 TDVI is a good drive, very quiet and very quock. But the diesel was only introduced in 2005, earliet I've seen is '55' plate, possible there could be '05' plate one's. And the diesel's are sought after, so more expensive. Sovereign spec is the one to go for, that gives you xenon's, better quality leather, touch screen sat nav etc. Many of the other models have the sat nav and other extra's. but the sovereign is the equivalent to the Elite model in the Omega range. Pre '05' just had 'SE' spec.
Post '05' are the best one's, even the 3.0 V6 is a good drive.
My ultimate one would be the Daimler Super Eight. The queen has one, it's effectively just a very expensive XJ LWB, but is veeeeery nice. It's for those that want a bit more than a Jaguar, but not quite a Bentley...sits just in the gap.

The early v8,s had problems with premature wear of the nicasil bore liners,I wouldnt buy one unless I had it closely inspected by someone who really knows that engine. Dont know if it was a problem on 2001 models tbh.

Bore issues are long gone really, engines that did suffer would have died long ago. Least thats what i read on Jag forums!

I have an earlier car - a 4-litre. It's great.

yes, the interior is cramped, but it certainly has grace, space and pace (well, the space it takes up on the road, mind)

It's an X300 model, which is pretty similar to the one you're looking at - bar the engine and front suspension.

it's easy to look after, apart from its thirst - I've never seen more than 17.2 mpg out of it.

2001 will be last of the old shape. They represent good value for money to be fair, if the price is right and its well spec'd, then for the money you can't argue. Things like sat nav in these cars were never colour screens, so not worth havng to be fair, but the more extras the better.
Like sitting in your arm chair, but everyone is right, you aint looking at a V8 jag to be gettin mid 30s MPH anyway. Don't worry about nikasol bore wear, its all pre 99 cars and if it aint happened yet, it never will.  :y  :y

Well depending on whether you have a 2.5/2.6 or 3.0/3.2

Remember the Jag will be heavier  than the Mig so i wouldnt expect it to be as quick as a 3.2 Omega
