What is a twirlie?

I want the answer AND why. I will give the answer if nobody gets it over the weekend. :y

I always thought it was that bunch of female gymnasts at the Olympics who used those twirly streamer things when doing their floor displays........    ;)

Then I heard an alternate reason for the name indicating those at, shall I say, well towards the other end of the age scale.....   :D

Yep. 30 points to Martin. that is exactly what it is. Pensioners with their free bus pass who get on the bus 10 minutes before they are aloud and ask...
