535d has a small & large turbo now producing 299 BHP according to BMW's website, and the 530d has a single large turbo producing 245 BHP 

This is for the new 5 I might add  Previous model was,
530d 218 BHP 2003-2005
530d 231 BHP 2005-2009
530d 245 BHP 2009-2010
535d 272 BHP 2004-2007
535d 286 BHP 2007-2010

New 5 as said is
530d 245 BHP 2010-
535d 299 BHP 2010-

I watched the report on 5th gear earlier with the 4.2 Audi A8 Diesel Quatro, if I was spending loadsa dosh on a new motor then the Quatro I think would be for me.

Shame it looks like an overgrown A4 though.

i can't get my head round spending 10,20,30 grand on a car that will be worth around 1,4,5 grand in 10 years time.

i have had cars years and because i bought them well i got my money back or in some cases they went up.

then theres the cost of fixing them

That's why companies buy them and claim tam and depreciation against them.

tell that to my dippy mate who lost about 25 grand of his kids inheritance buying new cars and losing out.

i have bought jags and run them and cleaned them up and made money on them because i can present a car correctly.

i know if i bought a new 60 grand m5 it would be worth 20 ish in say 5 years and 30k miles.

if you buy the best sought after omega for 2 grand i bet it won't lose 40 grand in 5 years lol.

have to agree, most i've spent is £6k on the beemer, and thats going to hold its value well. When time comes to sell i will get what i paid for it, or very, very close.

Car wise if i had to get something for decent miles i would spend 5-10k on something new-ish and semi decent.

Omegas are getting too old now and there are no other really good cheap RWD saloons around

in 1983 i brought a brand new audi quattro for 21,000 cant remember exactly anyway 1 owner 120,000 full service history all old mot and tax disc's original bill of sale sold it in 2008 to a enthuseiast for 18,000 buyer very happy, it was a red ur quattro if you know youre cars perfect as the day it left the factory.
Just goes to show some times you dont lose 10-20,000

yes theres exceptions to the rule and homologation rally specials are one of them although we were talking about luxury saloons which don't hold their values the same,  i guarantee most  60's,70's,80's performace rally models go up in value (dunno about renault 21 turbos lol).
I had a 3dr cosworth i bought for 3 grand gbp in 2001 that i sold for 6 grand gbp in 2003,that cars worth around 17k euros now (it was a left hooker and thats what they are doing abroad).
i know for a fact though a 1987  audi 100 cd or a bmw 525 with everything on it that would of cost 20 ish grand new is  worth about the same as a decent pair of shoes
