Hi all, I seem to have the rear crank oil seal leaking in my 3.2 V6 - thought the camcover gaskets where causing it as they had been leaking a bit too so I replaced them and cleaned out the breather system so I now know that these are leak free.
My question is - can any other leaks replicate the same symptoms of a rear oil seal leak and how big is the job of replacing it?
Would anyong recommend the using of a stop leak additive?

dont use it  if its not seen it may block somthing eles, best to find where its coming from, even if you need to get under the engine to see.

If you take the rubber bung out of the bottom of the bellhousing and have a feel around in there you might be able to find traces of oil on the front of the driveplate or the back of the block. That would pretty much confirm rear crank seal, IMHO.

Worth removing the scuttle panel and making sure it's not dripping down from the oil cooler area but I guess you'd have noticed that when doing the cam covers.

Thanks for the replys  - seems to be the rear oil seal (can find oil in the bellhousing) - how big a job is it to sort out and can anyone give me an idea as to what is involved in carrying out the repair.

local auto specialist did one for another member for 200 plus parts, box has to come off, auto in his case, new seal needs delicate touch and experienced hand to fit without damaging it in the process. May need to make a sleave to help slide the seal over the crank without damage. Apparently some manufcturers provide a sleave with the seal, but not G.M.

Thanks Chris  it's leaking about a tea spoonful overnight on the drive so I have put a catch can underneath it and fixed it with cable ties in position around the two bolts where it drips from - I have been told that as it had been in storage for a couple of years coupled with the breathers being blocked that this could have caused the seal to leak and that after cleaning out the breathers along with it now being driven that the leak could stop - what do you think  :question - I have also been told if it doesn't stop then I should try a can of Wynns stop leak (very undecided about this  :-/) but worse case scenario I'll look about getting it replaced.

It goes to show that low milage cars (55k miles) can present with there own list of problem too.

we tried the cleaning breathers thing too, its worth a try, but made no odds at all in the end as it started leaking again after a couple of days.

Defo avoid the stop leak imo.

Start savingmfor box off and new seal i suspect. :-/

Think you're right Chris -I'll give it a while and then arrange to have it replaced -  it's worth a few hundred to stop the nagging about it leaking lol  - I'll let you all know how I get on - thanks for your replies.
