New car???
« on: 06 July 2010, 19:02:31 »

Well new to me, but secondhand.

After much searching and fact finding, mainly on  tinternet, I've come to the conclusion that there ain't much out there to replace my TD estate with.
It's getting on a bit, it's slow to take off but once it's got going, it's a good load lugger and good cruiser.
And at 33mpg local running, and around 44 on a run not bad economy.

I was thinking of another diesel estate of some sort BMW 5 series, X-type Jag, Volvo V50, Vectra CDTi, VW Passat, Audi A4, Mondeo ......err not really :-/ are contenders but seem to have their faults one way or another. Some even out of my price range.
Up to £6,000 maybe to spend..................
so what's out there that fits the bill, if anything?

I can't make my mind up, what to do :-/

I'd have either a Volvo V70 or BMW 5 series.
A '54' plate V70 or later, as tha when the facelift came in, 'SE' spec with the D5 engine. It's a straight 5cyl turbo diesel engine, it produces 185bhp, sounds lovely and rturns very good MPG. It is FWD, bt not a bad car to drive at all, I enjoy driving them.
Failing that I would go for a 5 series, 525d or 530d.
I wouldn't go for a Merc, I sold an '04' E220 CDI estate with 103,000 miles for £7900. Classic spec, so base model, but still got sec levels. But I wouldn't want another.
Vectra isn't bad, the 3.0 V6 CDTI is good, but don't get an auto one, it'll destrory the gearbox...you must have a manual or you'll be having problems.

I'd recommend either a V70 or 5 series.

Yes I've also taken a look at them, not in the flesh. Out of my price range though, so not a contender.

Vectra isn't bad, the 3.0 V6 CDTI is good, but don't get an auto one, it'll destrory the gearbox...you must have a manual or you'll be having problems.

I'd recommend either a V70 or 5 series.

Auto or manuals best for both?

And why post 54 plate on the Volvo V70 diesel?
