Don't! - Boxes just don't last, very weak. Engine is actually a Izuzu lump, some bits have been removed by Vx.

Plenty of Vectra Diesel Auto's, but not too many of the 3.0 with the original box (if done more than 80k).

The Transmission simply doesn't like the power :(

Tunnie and BM are right, whatever you do, don't buy a V6 CDTI auto.
To give a reason, The Metropolitan Police have operated Vectra's right from 1996ish. The Vectra C was also taken up by them, in the guise of 3.0 V6 CDTI 'Specials'...effectively SRI spec. Every single one but 2 I have seen come through auction have all been non runners with gearbox issues. Yes, the police do drive their vehicles hard, but it's the only vehicle I've seen that 99% have come through as non runners. I'd never buy one, even dirt cheap...as it's a gamble with the auto gearbox.

Time to put some facts in this thread (as they are lacking in a few a places)

The Auto boxes are know to be a weak point with the earlier 5 speed variants being the worst.

On most of the boxes I have seen where you get a metallic sound its been a failed inner CV joint.

When the boxes have failed its often due to a failed oil cooler (oil-water heat exchanger) which dumps water into the box and buggers it.....adn we all know why such oil coolers fail dont we!.

The later 6 speed is showing very few issues (it has stronger CV joints)

So, the failure is not the box....the route cause is pretty much always the oil cooler (so service your coolant correctly or change it for an oil-air oneif your that paranoid) or bad diagnosis for the real failure.

Remember, the auto box is not a Gm part, its an Aisin sourced item.

I know the old AF20 boxes like those found in the old MK3 Cavalier were more or less bullet proof, my old one had done just on 200k

As Mark has said its normaly water ingress that is killing these boxes and we have had a few where the box breather pipe has been put in the wrong place so water has entered the box vis that route.

All i can say is give one a drive 'cause they are pretty rapid

So the 6sp manual ones are all ok???

If so, why doesn't plod buy all manual ones??

one of the things you used to get with an ex-plod was that it was always manual 'box, what changed their minds?

Yep, a clutch can be changed on the Omega in about 2-3 hours....on a Signum or Vectra your talking a whole day!

The F40 manual box is a good one, the M32 in the Astra/zafira is weaker sadly....

The six speed is better (although you will note that actualy, it was not the box 'wearing out' or 'failing', that was just a symptom) but, how do we know plod dont have them as they are not coming up for sale yet in any numbers.

Think DTM is saying the later 6 speed autos are ok, interesting on the oil cooler failure. Trouble is thats going to be common as most Veccys are fleet owned and serviced, very few are going to have correct maintenance

Yeh but, if you get one that is ok then you change the coolant and maintain it or fit an oil-air cooler  :y

Jobs a good un

And the earlier 5 speed ones are ok (with the exception of the cv joint which does not harm the box) whilst they have no water in them  :y
