metal rocker covers
« on: 20 July 2010, 17:50:10 »

hi, i am new here dont know how to use forums, so dont know where to look, i have the dripping oil syndrome from the plastic rocker covers, i hear you can fit the metal ones, but plenty reference on the net stating oil filler in wrong place and that people have fitted them, but not modifying the metal ones where would you top it up and how as it would be burried surely?

Your plastic cam covers are likely leaking due to blocked breathers. Fitting ally cam covers will just allow your breather system to find another way of relieving that pressure, and that's usually via the rear crank shaft seal. A bugger to change. Replace the seals in you existing covers with Vauxhall seals - pattern will age harden very quickly & you'll be at square one very quickly - and cler your breathers.
All shown in the maintenance section.  :y

hi thanks for your reply, car has undergone a lot of work recently, has had head gaskets, oil cooler all inlet gaskets, new rocker cover gaskets and has been back to the garage twice to fix still leaking but at least just one side, i am fed up with the smell as i use car for a taxi, all breathers clear according to mechanic, so someone has attempted to seal both and i got original gaskets so i just thought metal ones should solve it finally and get no excuses, this time, i just need piece of mind as everytime it leaks they blame on plastic covers, will the metal ones fit and if so do i need different gaskets and is there any space to top up/ remove oil cap.
thanks

only cos I type a load of sh1te!  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

Plastic cam covers do get blamed for a lot of the leaks, but they're normally not to blame.

Darth Loo-Knee or Elite Pete  tarvel a bit around the country & are more than capable under the bonnet of an Omega. You could ask them if your garage is unable to stop the leaks.  :y

i bought the omega as they are capable of high miles and its a bloomin nice drive, but no one seems to know what they are doing with them, i cant find anyone locally that would solve issues without costing me 100's, how do i contact these nice dudes and where do they work from? as i would love someone decent to look after it.
thanks :D :D :y

I really wouldn't bother with the metal Vectra covers, as you say the filler is in the wrong position and also the holes for the plug leads don't line up correctly. If your cam cover gaskets are fitted properly, the breathers cleaned and the gaskets were genuine from a Vauxhall dealer, they shouldn't leak ;)

If you trust the mechanic - possibly misplaced trust if he's done it twice already and not cured it - get him to use genuine GM cam cover gaskets (not any pattern ones - they are all poor) and use a torque wrench this time.  The cam cover bolts are 8Nm. Not 10Nm or 'nipped up'. 8Nm.

Every single one that I have seen prematurely fail has, without fail, been due to poor workmanship or poor quality pattern gaskets.
