How do diff's self destruct ?

My diff is getting worse, rapidly. It is dumping a lot of the oil I put in a few days ago, and noises are getting worse. Do they keep going but noises get worse, or just stop going round, which at 50mph would be fun  :(

Basically what I am asking is do I risk another 120 mile trip to work, or do I try and get a hire car for tomorrow.

Oh yes, anyone know how heavy a diff and drive shafts are ?. I managed to source one, but its 250 miles away, so I'll have to try and get it shipped.

As long as it has some oil in I wouldn't worry about driving it another few hundred miles. They can be noisy for ages before anything actually breaks.

I'd guess them to weigh 50 kg or so.

Thanks Guys, I'll chance it tomorrow. If you hear of a massive hold up on the M62 tomorrow, you will know its died.  :'(

I would advocate caution.

If it seizes (and it does happen if it gets as dry as a witches whatsit) then theres a couple of hundred horses trying to turn it and something has to let go.

Not nice if its the shaft locating bolts and the shaft then does an impersonation of a whirling dervish whilst travelling at a lepton or ten on the motorway....

Ahh, yes. That happened to my mate's Vauxhall Shove-it way back when we were still at school. Probably at sub-lepton speeds given the 1256 cc lump. Made him sit up and take note. Also removed the gear lever extension from the back of the gearbox in an unsympathetic manner and deposited bits of it over the carriageway. ;D

Fortunately, we'd changed the gearbox about a fortnight before, and managed to rob the old one of enough bits to make a working one again.

Eh, thanks a lot, really build my confidence up  ;D ;D

While travelling at steady speed with some load on, its quiet, but slowing down it starts to clonk, something's definately missing/loose/not where it should be. As I mentioned it has sprayed out a fair bit of the oil I put in a few days ago, so the front seal has definately gone.

As soon as I can organise shipping of a 45 kg lump up from Southampton, all will be sweetness and light  :y
