What kind of oil to use in refilling a diff ?
« on: 03 August 2010, 22:13:13 »

I have managed to surce a replacement diff, and thought I would replace the oil while its out. I know Mark said to use good quality SAE 90 oil when refilling a diff, but which kind ?. I have read that some diffs use hypoid gears (?) and so should use hypoid 90 oil, also there is some called EP 90 for extreme pressure. Any sugestions/recomendations ?.

Hypoid and extreme pressure oils are terms often used interchangeably so it's probably the stuff you're looking for.

It'll say if it's suitable for final drives. Ideally look for an API GL-5 specification.

Great Kevin, thanks.

Interestingly enough, I have been using the car to drive to work this week, being unable to get a hire car. So to minimise the wear on the diff and hopefully last until the weekend, I have been driving like "Miss Daisy", no rapid acceleration, easy up and down hills, really taking it easy. My normal consumption is 30mpg. Its now 39mpg, and thats on LPG. :y

So if you see a slow Mig on the M62, its not an OAP, its me saving fuel. ;D

Cheers Ken

Blimey hell 39?

Mark mentions the correct oil in the guide iirc, got mine from Halfords. Hypoid and the stench are all I can remember off hand.

Aye. Once rebuilt a diff to go in the Westfield and my garage smelt of cat's pee for months afterwards. ;D
