Volvo gear not working
« on: 13 August 2010, 14:07:07 »

ok so I have this Volvo S80 2000, whose gear seems to have a problem

actually its totally not working, I mean I can put the car on reverse and just stand outside and it wont budge ;D

anyway, I dont know whether the gear has broken or a hook or something has come off ??

any ideas ??

I dont want to take it directly to the garage as it will cost like anything !!

Did you get any warnings? Slipping in gear etc?

Manual or Auto?

If manual, clutch, if Auto, check ATF first ;)

Automatic Transmission Fluid

That may well be all that is wrong... Low fluid. Were there any other symptoms? Slipping in gear etc?

You have checked that to be a fact?

If so, when did the trouble start?  Did the non-gear situation happen suddenly, or were there any warning signs?

yeah, I've checked that

It started about a week ago,
I dont know how it happened but it I started the car to go somewhere and it started to move, but as the engine became warm, it lost power or something and then it changed gears, tried all of them but nothing happened,

next day same thing happpened, it movess a little bit when the engines cold, but as it starts to heat, the car starts to die
:(

Sounds ATF related to me... When it gets warm (and thinner) it stops working :y

Right.  It does sound like a broken linkage, or u/s torque converter. :'( :'(

The real auto box experts should be along later to give further advice ;) ;)

Could be a fluid pressure issue perhaps? Thick fluid OK but losing pressure when thinner? Perhaps some sort of relief valve or solenoid stuck open, or a leaking seal bleeding  pressure away until it can't hold the clutches engaged - or the torque converter is getting starved of fluid.

Most boxes have a test port for checking the fluid pressure - reckon that might be a good starting point.
