Buying a Mitsubishi Pajero
« on: 29 August 2010, 22:11:05 »

Iv'e been looking at buying a Mitsubishi Pajero 2.5 diesel turbo intercooler automatic.1992. Has anybody had any dealings with them. And can give me any ideas on reliability & the main things to check. Ive never owned a diesel before. I wont be using it for towing just need something with more space for the dog.

I have a friend who has one to pull his Pikey Palace. Even without the van he struggles to get 14/15 round town driving like Miss Daisy.

Had one of theses for about 3 years before swapping it for the Omega. No real problems, changed the alternator on it, no one told me it had the oil pump attached to the back, made a bit of a mess on the garage floor. Do miss it some times as it was great fun off road, would get the long wheel base if buying again as has very small boot space in the short wheel base and getting in and out of the back seat could be a problem. Over all was pleased with it and it had all the toys you could want as standard.

Ive had one too,and if it was me i would recommend you go for the 2.8 TD model, much better engine plus has an intercooler, better fuel consumption than the 2.5 strangely...  the 2.8 also benefits with a chain driven engine, and not a belt as the 2.5 does..go for a LWB too

When viewing ensure that when you start the jeep and drive it that it doesn't stall/cut out a few minutes later...this is a sign of the seals on the pump needing replaced

I'm sure Tonkapaj will be along shortly to help some more(i know him from the POCUK forum, worth joining when you get one)

Hope that helps  :y

Thanks for youre advice. It was the LWB i was thinking of. Due to the size i wasn't expecting fuel consumption to be great. Surprises me though that the 2.8 is better on fuel than the 2.5. just need something with space for the dog pluss camping stuff & fishing gear. With the omega being saloon the dog virtually takes up the back seat. Plus it would be safer. I can put her in her crate in the back.

That brings back some memories..............mostly at fuel stations  ;D ;D

Seriously, the Paj is a great motor in all of its guises.
The 2.8 is a better engine than the 2.5. It is more economical, chain driven (no chance of cam belt snap) but apart from that they are the same car.

If I was ever to return to the Paj fold, then I would go for the LWB 3.5 V6. This is the most fun of the lot, in a straight line of course, because like all 4x4's, they don't corner too well   :D

The 2.5's and the 2.8s' have very sensitive cooling systems and should they develop a cooling problem the head will crack nine times out of ten. Usually needing a new head. Only the 2.8's suffer from pump seal failure which is not to be ignored.

The prices for them are very low for obvious reasons. Make sure you get one which has been looked after and it could be all right. It will need huge amounts of regular servicing making Omega upkeep seem relatively inexpensive.

If you don't need to go offroad there is not a lot of point in owning one really and you may eventually wonder why you bought it when you add up the costs of running it. ::)

I sold mine in May 2008 and in the first year the saving in fuel etc enabled us to buy and run two Vx. The 2.5 mig and a 1.4 Corsa. That is quite an eye opener.

The LWB has a 95 litre fuel tank and diesel at £1.20 a litre costs £114 to fill up. Combined with abysmal fuel consumption it could make your eyes water  ;D ;D ;D

That's not so bad.. I don't seem to get much more than that out of the Omega  :D
