Right. Had another go following some advice.
AND, yes it is the same engine/crank. Just on the manuals there is a spigot bearing
pushed into the crank end + there is a spacer for the flywheel on the autos that you must keep and use.. A bit of a pig top remove - took over an hour, but got there in the end.
Then whilst I was under the car I decided to pop the gearbox and stuff back on - alone.
So, off to Marks to borrow his matching 2 tonne jack, then I employed a clever ittle tri. I used cheap £2.99 ratchet strap and secured the box to the first (forward most) jack to ensure it doesn't slip off. I also found a 1/2" thick slab of wood between the front and rear sumnps evens things up a bit and makes the box rise at about the right angle. Torque convertor fitted to box, then up it went. Took less than 30 minutes to fit the box back on. Then lowered it a bit to fit the cable plugs and the selector lever.
Then it was on with the propshaft, which I had left cable tied in place. 2 minute job with one rear wheel raised to spin the shaft.
Lastly, the 6 torque converor bolts. NOW, this can be a pig, but if you use some kitchen towel and place that over each bolt before you fit the 3/8" drive 15mm socket on, it will be a tight fit thus preventing the bolts from slipping out and wedging themselvs between the driveplate and bellhousing. Did them all up loosely first, then torqued up to finish. Plug back in and call it a day.
OK, so I did a few other bits and bobs, but nothing too major. I will sort out the plumbing tomorrow if it remains dry and then hopefulyl it will be a runner by lunchtime. If it sounds ok and drives I will then do the cambelt kit, water pump and full service. then LPG and finally new MoT and full valet. There are a couple of other jobs, like the check strap and that dent, but they will come last.
So, it lives again.
Interesting day. And yes, you can remove and refit a box on your own. Ok, it would be easier with two, but one can manage as long as you are careful and you use something to stop that box slipping off the jacks.
