Day out in the Elite to get her a sister!
« on: 05 September 2010, 22:18:02 »

Hello, just been on a 310 mile round trip with my dad to pick up an absolutely immaculate low miles 2000 f/l 3.0 MV6 saloon manual with FSH, cambelt, Irmscher front bumper (factory fit) rear spoiler, recaro,  factory fit hideaway tow bar, refurbed wheels, it's been pampered and is a minter! (It's a lovely champagne colour).

I went down in the Elite (auto). On cruise at mostly 80, it returned 32.4 mpg! Well pleased with that!

The MV6 was showing 25.4 mpg urban. Reset the trip, and after a return journey of 155 miles, it returned 34.8 mpg at 80, and sometimes alot faster! The suspension IMO is much better than the Elite. I like the Elite but the MV6 is comfy but handles much better, and copes well with speed bumps.

Having never driven a manual Omega before, the engine seems so much more livelier with this box, it's rev happy and is a flying machine, yet nice and quiet.

Got a few little jobs to do in morning.

I'll get them both cleaned up and put some pictures on. The gold MV6 contrasts well with the blue Elite!

Hi! Yeah you're right. There's been quite a few not so good ones, and some right rubbish out there, but I've struck lucky with this one. I don't think I could've found a better example!

I felt a bit sorry for the seller! :-/ I could tell he was genuinely upset at selling it, but hey, he's got a porsche now so he'll be ok when he bonds with that! I could tell he was really genuine and maintained it really well! I love Omegas! They just thundered along the M1. They're so under rated IMO, they're amazing!

Yeah it's not full irmscher. just front bumper (factory fit though), and rear spoiler. It looks better in the flesh than the pictures.

Thanks! I'm treating them both tomorrow to a lovely oil change. I'm saving up the oil from numerous changes i do for people and myself to use to treat my fence posts!

Unless you have driven all four varieties, it's hard to comment, but the MV6 suspension is awesome compared to the Elite (which is a horrible, horrible setup on the twisty bits). AND, the Manual will piss all over the Auto in ANY format.

I had the 'Manual v's Auto' debate a while ago and seemed to lose.  I drive an Auto, but still protest the Manual will out-do it hands down!

Due to gearing, there are certain speeds where the auto will out accelerate the manuals. But in a straight race to 100mph, I'd rather be in a manual.

I've had a 0-60 in 7.5 from my 1998 3.0l auto MV6 (stopwatch, so not mega accurate). Best I've managed in a 3.0 manual is also 7.5 (again, stopwatch), but that wasn't my car, so I was being kinder (despite the owner saying I should try harder ;D). I reckon with a bit of tweaking, there could be a sub 7s manual out there.

(I'm talking 3.0l with non LSD - LSDs and 2.5 diffs will make sub 7s easy, possibly even for an auto)

Definitely, I think the manual is faster overall, but I got the impression that the auto is faster at certain speeds. I was used to driving a T5 manual, where you could be somewhat lazy with your gear changes and rely on the turbo, but in the Omega manual you've really got to keep the revs up and make full use of the box if you want to make it go. It's great for little trips round town aswell.

I do prefer a manual, but the manual in the Omega can be a bit notchy. But, having said that the Omega I use every day is a 2.6 manual Elite and it took me ages to find one, but that's all I wanted...it had to be manual. I do enjoy driving a 3.2 Elite auto, but it's just not the same. It is better at some things, like town driving. But on a country road or motorway I find a manual much better.
On the way back from Newent- Well drove to mid wales, then back to Oxford I averaged 34mpg. Which I think is pretty good. That's country lanes, A roads and dual carriageways and a bit of motorway. That was driving within the speed limit, but 'making good progress' whenever possible.
If a 2.6 it'd have to be manual, but I could live with a 3.2 auto.

I know exactly what you mean when you say notchy about the gearbox. Someone once described it as agricultural, I know exactly what they mean. The throw seems to be quite long, and the gear stick doesn't seem to glide very well. I'll have to check and adjust if necessary. 34 mpg isn't bad in your 2.6! I managed 34.8 mpg IIRC cruising at 80 on a 160 mile m-way journey!
