I`m hoping soon to 'inherit' (although mercifully, not due to a bereavement!) a 1995 Land Rover Disco. with a 300 TDI engine and an auto-transmission; what`s the likely fuel consumption?.....Whilst allowing for the different fuel type; would the MPG, likely be better or worse than my 2.5 petrol Mig.? :-/

Worse and check it carefuly, unlike the landies, the Discos rot like Austin Princess's. (I am ignoring chassis components!)

Auto boxes are a bit weak if its ever been off road

thats the original Series 1? Not sure about autobox on those, but generally the vehicle is reliable, if not exactly refined (though more refined that a proper landie ).

Rust can be an issue.

Run it on a veggie oil mix, more power, quieter & cheaper.

I (or my son, currently....) run a 300 TDi Disco commercial as a winter hack.  About 550 miles or better to the tank.  Capacity is 89 litres, apparently, so that works out circa 28 to the gallon. 

Rust is major enemy number one.  Watch for an attack of the colliewobbles about 50 mph when you hit a pothole as it can be difficult to control.  generally the steering damper that will be shot but can also be agle hub preload needing set up.

A decat pipe and a blooming good service works wonders as do short oil changes on a former farm workhorse thats a bit bunged up - or it did on mine!

Disco 2 wheels do not fit onto Disco1 without use of adaptors but that said, defender wheels are a straight swap, tyre size excepted.

A little more refined than a Defender bodywise, but the underpinnings are essentially the same.

Funnily enough; I have been looking at the wholesalers`veggie-oil prices hereabouts (Rape-seed oil: 20 ltrs. @ 68p. per/litre).
I`ve read that a Sunflower/DERV mix is better (thinner) for Winter months.....but also, that most veggie oils tend to scour dirt from the tank/pipes; meaning that blocked filters are a more frequent possibility on an older vehicle. :-/

Disco chassis basically range rover, 100'' wheelbase has reasonable road manners, anti roll bars fitted to 300 model. Rust is an issue but most parts replaceable by a good welder, Great forums for advice. I,ve got a V8 Love it to bits.

I will be investing in a oil and filter change as as soon as I get it, Broocie. .....and a transmission-fluid change shortly after that (as funds permit)......I don`t know much at all about the L.R Disco. family; is the Discovery-Haynes as poor as the the Omega-Haynes?
.....at least it`s up in the air for crawling underneath for servicing.

Veggie oil will clean out your tank is advised to carry spare fuel filter. Can run from seperate tank using switch over valve.

I sold my wifes disco 300tdi at xmas, (got her a td5) it did 30 mpg
the boot floor cills and footwells can all rust, but a few hours welding and its as good as new,

the chassis dont seem to rust much.

I've driven loads of different lannies. I've got to say I found the auto disco the worst for just about everything. Yes it's ok, and a (little) more refined than a defender, but give a defender anyday!

hi i owned a 300Tdi auto it was slow but once rolling it was fine i pulled trees out with mine and towed real heavy loads and it did give really good fuel return too. It was getting rusty towards the end of my ownership tho all in all a good old tool.

I have a Disco, but it's got the proper engine. mates with diseasels report upper 20's so not that different to Omega.

very capable, but likely to break often. The good news, however, is that you can usually repair it with a hammer and an adjustable spanner.

auto box much better than manual for anything, especially towing or off-road
