Citroen Traction Avant (front wheel drive)
« on: 26 September 2010, 23:17:52 »

I am travelling a lot at the moment and for the past 10 days or so have been in the Netherlands in Amsterdam, Venlo, Utrecht and Delft. Arrived in Rotterdam this afternoon where I am staying on the SS Rotterdam cruise hotel (static) which has been restored tothe late fifties style when it as first launched in 1958 - even music is mid 60s - Beatles,Procul Harum, Kinks etc but what was really good was the meeting of the Citroen Traction Avant club being held on this vessel also. I know you guys talk adversely about front wheel drive but the Dutch are fanatical about this model produced from 1933 to 1957 - everyone telling me how smooth a ride it delivers. I will try and post some photos when I get back but just dug out a couple of websites for now.

there must be 100 of the different models hear including the big 6 cylinder versions and cabriolets.

Don't tell anyone but Front Wheel Drive is generally better that Rear Wheel Drive, it is wrong to compare directly  as they are generally very different cars that suit different driving styles.......... :y

the traction avant system was a very well thought-out design, giving cheapness, good traction and lots of interior space, everything it was designed to do and more.

we may be doing FWD a dis-service when we universally pan it, it is really only in handling, cornering, braking and traction where RWD is superior. All the other stuff like cheap to manufacture are a straight win for FWD.

The big Citroens like the DS range and CX and even the smaller BX have to be some of the most comfortable cars I have ever been in.

They will not win any races but for sheer comfort in the 'rear end' as it where, a Mig does not even come close.

That said, I would not pay the running costs of such a vehicle.
