My local Vx dealer has run out of sump plug O rings, so my thoughts of doing an oil change this weekend have taken a knock.

However, I recall reading a thread about oil extractors on here (which I can't find!) and was wondering whether anyone can remember the thread OR can give me an opinion on these things. It would save me having to source sump plug O rings and, I understand would make oil changes easier (though I'd still have to crawl under the car to get at that wonderfully-sited filter!  ).

i would not bother with them, just wait until you can get an O ring for the sump bolt. I've not replaced the o-ring on mine for couple of years, is yours leaking?

you only need to change copper washers every time.

the later torx plugs with rubber o-ring last much better

i keep some in stock and only change it if it looks tired / leaky

Unless the O ring is obviously damaged, split, lumps missing etc you'll be OK to re-use the old one      The O ring isn't subject to much that would damage it, it's only squashed by a very small amount to make the seal when it's fitted corrected.

You could of course re-anneal it & use it again.

No, it's not leaking, Tunnie. Mine's the rubber version, so maybe I can get away with reusing it as you suggest.

I replace the rubber 'O' ring every third oil change, and never have any problems

Personally, and this is a matter of personal opinion based upon no fact whatsoever, I'd rather change the sump plug washer regardless. Could you not order one from another VX dealer and get them to post it? Failing that, I need to buy a load of parts next week, so I could order one from my local dealers if you want and post it you, (just send us one back next time you get one).

As for the oil extractors, I've used one once and found it to be a pretty pointless and frustrating exercise.

that depends if you have a sump drain plug, Smarts don't  :-?

No, it's not leaking, Tunnie. Mine's the rubber version, so maybe I can get away with reusing it as you suggest. 

Easily, just watch when you release the plug, the ring sometimes sticks to the sump 

I really should get a new o-ring for mine, its done countless changes (every 3-4k) over 51k

Thanks for the offer. I'll try and get one this week from another dealer, or maybe use the old one for now...it was only replaced 6 months ago.

It'll be as good as new then, just re-use it, you'll have no problems.
