estate replacement - VW caravelle?
« on: 23 October 2010, 20:03:35 »

Been hunting for a replacement for my retired estate. Was contemplating another one, and/or a van for other jobs, but then moved onto van based people carriers. I've evaluated my transport needs and want the space of a van with family friendliness and driving comfort!

So i've been contemplating after a test drive the VW Caravelle (or Transporter combo). It was fabulous! Similar ones are the Hyundai i800 and the Mercedes Viano. There's also the Fiat Ulysse, Renault Grand Espace, Citroen Dispatch combi etc etc.

Any thoughts or comments? the VWs would be a big change from the vauxhall world. the 2.5 TDi versions getting most of my attention.

Any knowledge on any of these types of vehicles?

Thanks for any and all thoughts!

Vectra Elite Estate doing good post-Omega service but still not as nice to sit in.

One last Omega on the drive, one Corsa on the lawn...maybe they'll go to a good home before too long!

Fantastic motor solid engines, have a mate that converts transporter vans into camper vans look very smart :y

Go for a VW mate! :y

Build quality is first rate - we've had an '02 Caddy 1.9SDI for some years now, and when it needs replacing, it'll be with another.
Been everywhere in it, and it returns around 53 mpg too.

What about the latest Caddy Maxi-derived people-carrier?
Must say, I'm quite tempted myself! :y

My brother drive a T4 van, he loves it. 2.5 turbo diesel with 5 cylinders(i think) and a massive 100bhp. For all the engine size I believe them to be under powered.

But if I was buying one it would probably be the VW. That said was at Vauxhall dealer the other day and they had a brand new Vivaro as a crew cab van that was all trimmed out really nice inside. No idea of price, suspect very expensive.

If money was no object I would opt for the Transit Torneo diesel automatic minibus/day van.

vw impeccable build quality pretty good consumption and can be chipped to 150bhp and still retain the economy,
I800 uses mitsubishi 2.5 td engine built under licence, but with electronic pump and gubbins good comfort and spec and very cheap to buy
fiat ulysse dont bother terrible !!
renault? enough said awful problems
same with citroens and just about anting from the psa group
try the first 2 again and decide then
