Need-to-know about fitting new locks?

As it says on the tin, really...

Just theorising, whats to stop me fitting facelift locks to a 98 car? Keys, ignition barrel, drivers door lock, and bootlock. Id also like to utilise the electric boot release at some point too. I think it's a pretty straightforward job, and shouldn't cost a great deal, but If I've missed anything, or there are any pointers/pitfalls to know about, please let me know.

I've done this on a Pre facelift mk3 Granada using locks from a later one.

I suspect it will physically straight forward, as fitting points should be identical.

Any issues are likely to be electrical ie are the locks from the same model (gls/cd/cdx etc) as different specs might have different features. If you can cross check the looms, that might help. Also are the lock motors the same? Will you be able to transfer the immobiliser chip to the new keys, or will you need to change the ecu along with the locks themselves?

Would have thought that`s relatively straightforward. Probably need complete lock assembly with motor from a facelift and fit a push to make, non latching switch like this http://images.maplin.co.uk/300/rx82d2.jpg
I`ve got a F/L complete boot lock assembly with solenoid if you wanna give it a go

Thanks RobG, I was working on the premise that all Omega saloon boots are basically the same, in so far as both pre and post-facelift have a manual opening function, the facelift's of course being hidden inside the boot, pre-fl the pivoting griffin.

The electric operation is sited on the bootlip, not the actual bootlid. I'm hoping that as it's essentially a separate system a fl electric function can be retro-fitted onto, eg: a 1998 car without any hassle at all.

I'm assuming!

Bootlip is where the retaining bar is :)

Honestly, dont worry about it, I'll look at my dad's facelift tomorrow, and compare it with the DiamondBlackBeast.

The Retaining Bar? Im sure i used to drink in a place called that..... :-/

Ok, so just running it through my mind again. I think I see exactly what you're saying..

So..isnt the only difference between a pre-fl / fl bootlid (apart from obvious sheetmetal differences) the lack of an actual key 'ole?

All the gear for electric operation is on the lip, rather than the lid, yes?

apart from the boot lid, what are you trying to achieve? Everything else is the same whether early or later cars ....  :-/

Just looked at the excellent pic RobG,

Thanks very much for that, you may be the guy I need to speak to some more!.

It's not something we're obsessing over just yet, but replacing the lock system with a facelift version would be a good way of getting newer keys, sorting a dickey bootlock as well as 'modding' the car by upgrading to remote boot opening.

What sort of price would you want for the lot? That'd ideally be including wiring for the bootlock and he'd want both keys too.

Thanks again for your help so far, it's always nice to learn new things. Its even nicer when that info is actually useful, unlike most of what I know!  8-)

Because the bootlock is a little dicky, plus he has a scabby spare key. When you price up a replacement key plus programming locally/getting a new bootlock, with key (so thats a total of three keys for one car now) if he could source a full replacement set on here for the same sort of money he's also gaining a remote leccy boot. As you say, the rest is the same, so should be an easy fit.  :)

3 keys? I assume you have a replacement ignition or driver's door lock. There's only so many different tumblers inside a lock, so if you get a selection of other locks you dis-assemble them & build up a lock to suit your key.  :y

Cars gone to scrappy now. The lock mech is the only bit I`ve got regards the boot. If it`s of no use I`ll just sell the solenoid/motor from it.
