I actually really like BMW's, if only it wasn't for the image problem.

I am immune to the hate brigade. I have owned a BMW of various models for over 10 years. I am really tempted to get another 530D Saloon ( current shape, although second hand) I am only doing 5000 miles a year, how can I justify it??

A good car that you want can always be justified!

If you are doing only 5,000 miles a year it will mean your fuel bill is low, even with this car, and it stays in good nick 8-) 8-) 8-)
