Most secure is one that fits on a tow-bar, or i used to put the seats down on my saloon and put it inside, much safer.. I bought an estate just to make it easier..

Mine fits on the tow bar, very stable and you can still use the boot, got mine from Wilco cost about £38.

Towbar rack would be my favourite, I have a 10 year old Maxxraxx http://www.maxxraxx.co.uk/?gclid=CPKmhcePuqUCFYpO4QodjVOwNw which will take 4 bikes (5 at a squeeze) and which I don't have to give a single thought to once it's loaded up.
It's done many many fully laden miles - wasn't the cheapest but well worth its money over the years.

In the boot IMO. Take the front wheel out and two will just about fit with a Bose shelf and the seats down. Don't have to worry about it being stolen, wiped off the roof in a car park or squashed when reversing or driven into from behind..

Avoid the ones the strap to the boot lid, but I think that goes without saying...?

Behind the front seats and around the bikes in the cabin mostly. Obviously that way there will only be two of you in the car, no good if passengers in the back, In which case it's on the roof with roof bars and don't drive under anything with a hight limit.  Wince.

Or for pikeys amongst us, can chuck em in the palace.  ;)
