Modified insurance recommendation
« on: 26 November 2010, 11:18:52 »

Anyone recommend an insurer for modified cars. Carol Nash will insure anything in the bike world for a price. Not sure they are into cars though.

And by modified we're talking engine and drive train changes.

Ta.

Adrian Flux, Sky Insurance, I think A-Plan..

I've been with 'Flux for a while, and the mod sheet on the MR2 is as long as my arm (although no engine swap, yet) and they've been very competitive every year, and I know they've covered V6 MR2s.. so a V8 Omega ought to be no problem ;)

Try A-Plan

I asked about insurance cover for modifications out of interest. It appears that LPG is classed as a modification and some insurers are pretty easy about them within limits (ie no turbos but wheels OK - that sort of thing)

Give Steevange Insurance Services a try.  They do a lot of specialist insurance cover.  Have done us a good deal on the new limo!!!

LPG is a modification, and must be stated.  I my (limited) experience, it didn't affect the premium on my MV6, and added around £6 to the Elite.

A towbar added £900 to my insurance (up to £2400!) on a MV6
when I asked Swinton.
Needless to say, I didn't take them up on their offer.

I like the Post Office insurance.
They tend to quote slightly higher, but because they charge MUCH less interest, they usually work out cheaper overall.
Have both the trannie and MV6 insured with them - no mods except towbars tho...

Honestly not a bad quote, I reckon.. Heck, my first year (mirroring 10yrs NCB) was more than that on a standard car ;D  The MR2 with all mods declared (turbo, exhaust, engine management, injectors, clutch, flywheel, suspension, brakes, chassis bracing, roll bar, etc) is £650 and covers the value of mods like for like.

Actually - that's important to check when comparing quotes, check they cover the value of the modifications otherwise if the worst happens, you get enough to buy yourself a replacement standard car..

And forums do usually count as clubs, so OOF should count (ROC does and that's just a forum, too)

It's less than Direct Line quoted as a renewal on stock.

We do not charge for membership, so although we are set up as a not-for-profit organisation, we don't always have access to certain discounts.

True - Adrian Flux don't seem to care, though ;) MR2ROC doesn't charge either (though we do accept donations if people are feeling nice) :) We don't have any negotiated 'special' discounts, but 'belonging' does give you some discount with them, if you see what I mean?

I was guessing that membership of "a club" would show an interest and awareness in all things mechanical that normal BMW owner types would scoff at. Making club members less likely to have an accident due to mechanical failure or the like?

I'm pretty sure that's the logic, yep :)

Plus then they know where to look for details of all your undisclosed mods ;D (Not you-you, but you know what I mean)

Go for limited mileage if it's going to be a 2nd car.

My Westfield costs £320 odd for 7.5k limited fully comp. with Europe wide breakdown recovery. :y

Might be worth trying MSM. http://www.msminsurance.co.uk/. Not sure if he does modified cars but he's an enthusiast himself rather than a call centre droid which makes a big difference.
