What Price this Alfa...
« on: 05 July 2007, 14:29:18 »

I like and i need a new challenge very soon....

its dropped a piston....to me thats cgoing to cause bottome end issues....so engine replacement i reckon rather than repair ( if im wrong someone please correct me)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110146228969&sspagename=ADME:L:RTQ:UK:1

Ive been quoted a price for it.....what would be resonable to buy that car in that condition?

oh and an alfa 1.8..any reason if i have removed and replaced a K series complete engine and also removed an omega 2,5v6 engine and box that i would find this massivley more challenging?  :-/

EDIT  - ive just spoken to a work colleage who was in the trade....and he says one of the most difficult cars to work on he has ever seem...so i guess this is maybe not a go-er  :-X

Alfas are known to be a swine to work on. The V6 is a complete nightmare!

I would look elsewhere. Saab 9000 maybe? Find a V6 with issues! ;)

A v6 with issues. well that narrows it down to  lb66 just about every v6 wouldn't you agree  :D. I think the most reliable v6 i've ever known was my old 3.0 essex Capri. Pretty bullet proof considering the abuse i gave it. ;D ;D

:)Alphas have their issues but when they're good...............
Sadly i go back to the days of Suds & GTV's, back then not much would touch 'em if you could keep 'em taped together and did'nt mind the odd electrical fire or Fred Flintstone footwells!!(early air con?) ;D

Got to admit there was a GTV V6 around Borehamwood in Herts from my old days that used dance circles around my Capri :'(, was quick in a straight line and actually went around the corners instead of sideways, and it did sound nice. Trouble was he spent as much time off the road (for repairs) as on it

Those 4 pots arn't so bad....other than the 36K mile 3 year belt and tensioner change interval (Alfa halved theres to!), the complexity of the belt setup (not so bad with the right tools) and the need to change the inlet cam timing actuator (variator) at the same time to as they seem to be shorter lived than the belts........and they rattle like buggery otherwise!

I was offered the one listed - outwith ebay - for £475.

Decided not to due to complexities.

Intrestingly we never get oil cooler failures listed on ebay up here. Ive noticed the two most common spares or repairs ebay auctions in Scotland are ( the obvious) K series and then the alfa 156 ( most often with failed timing belts)

Naah. I reckon a bloke on a ladder trying to repair it with self tappers would be more appropriate!  ;D
