Have been cleaning my breathers this afternoon in between downpours, and have a couple of questions. Firstly after cleaning the breather box as "how to" instructs I blew through the two smaller pipes and although they seem clear there seems to be a little more restriction in one of the pipes, is this normal? :-/
Secondly, when removing the large breather pipes I noticed that there was another pipe (of a slightly larger diameter than the smaller breather pipes) cable tied to the "V" section of the large breathers,the end of this tube was not connected to anything. Is this normal or have I disturbed something? :-/

one of the smaller pipes goes to the carbon canister - so yes, it will be more difficult to blow through that one.

The "extra" pipe is the autobox breather pipe - it should NOT be connected to anything at that end ... I hope yours is an auto

Are you blowing in to ecotec box? middle will be harder, but you will need to put lots and lots of carb cleaner through it.

The spare tube is autobox breather

Thanks for the replys chaps, phew yes it is an auto (breathes a sigh of relief) please forgive the pun as for the ecotec bit its compleatly removed from the engine. also I was comparing the two smaller tube only not the larger outer tubes.

Was you blowing into ecotec bit (should be approx same for the 2 middle ones), or into pipework on car (the carbon canister will be restrictive)

Yup the ecotec bit, there is a difference between the two middle tubes.

Yup the ecotec bit, there is a difference between the two middle tubes.

Shouldn't really be...   ...use a pin to unblock the holes, then loads more carb cleaner....

if it helps put your mind at rest about the amount of carb cleaner, I seem to remember using about 5 tins of the stuff when I did my 3.2 ... there again the cam cover gaskets had failed on it which were probably at least in part caused by the clogged up breathers ...

Me again I cant seem to find any info on cleaning the thin pipe on the right of the ecotec box or what it does. I have tried to blow down it but it seems to be totally airtight :-/. does it have some sort of valve system at the crankcase end?

That pipe goes to carbon canister behind engine.

Yes. There's a solenoid valve between the canister and this pipe which is normally shut. This pipe only carries fuel vapours so it is unlikely to need cleaning.
