I didn't think there was a little end bearing. Gudgeon pin is usually an interference fit in the con rod and a sliding fit into the piston of a sliding fit into both and secured with spring clips. If it's got play, a new / second hand piston and / or rod is probably the best solution.

Has the engine been stripped to confirm this diagnosis?

your mechanic is in the wrong game, he should be capable of things far far greater than a humble spanner jockey if he can conclusivley diagnose a failed little end without lifting a spanner.  :-? :-? :-? ;)

Hmm. It's a very rare failure.

It's also almost impossible to diagnose such things by ear.

Could be anything from a hydraulic tappet to a slapping piston in a dry bore and probably numerous other things, IMHO.

What are the symptoms?
