i'm not sure you can put a time limit on how long someone will reply, as i've said, who's not gonna be busy at this time of year

no one sees any harm in you mentioning your car's developed more faults possibly as a result of work carried out by a member so dont worry about that, cos i'll say this much, if there's any reason pete's unable to sort it for you, i'm pretty sure other's can help in some way

this is an excellent forum, even when something not so good happens

it has been said in one of the op post that the breathers had mayo in them when was this as the post wasn't that long ago iirc, could this not have caused the problem as some of the breather holes are small and can block, also has nothing been damaged when doing the oil cooler. I just find it very strange that faulty work takes 8000 miles to show up when we are talking oil seals, i would have thought that if oil seals of any type where fitted wrong they would leak from day 1 (my thoughts i could be wrong)

This has happened before and will most likely happen again.

The only solution I can see is for the mechanics on here to offer some sort of warranty/guarantee on their work in case something goes wrong.

Peeps who want work doing should ask about such guarantees and if a mechanic will not guarantee his work then he/she has choice of going elsewhere or accepting this knowing if things go pear-shaped then there is no comeback.

If there is a problem then the 2 interested parties should get together and try and sort things out - if no compromise can be reached then one of the expert admins should step in and arbitrate with their decision being final.

In future if I want anything doing by a mechanic on here I would be asking 'what if ' questions.

Pete did my cambelt last jan and 8,000 miles later everything is fine - I think, tho' would have to invest £90 for a cam locking kit to check the timing.

Re: the Original post

Personally I think you should be speaking to Pete direct, and not broadcasting your complaints on the forum.

As you had 3.0 cams fitted thats clearly a modification and not a maintenance related proceedure, so is void of any warranty, whethere fitted by a dealer or not.

and as mentioned, alot can happen within an engine after 8k miles, for all anyone knows youve been giving the car a good hiding (noone puts 3.0 cams in for economy) the whole time.

Im sure Pete would appreciate you keeping this between the two of you from now on, and for others to politely keep out of it.

On the other hand, we can all have the option of taking our cars to a main dealer who will offer a warranty on their work, if that is what we desire. Warranties don't come for free, though, unfortunately. I expect the OP would have paid a lot more than £500 at a main dealer.

Nobody can say for certain who or what is at fault without inspecting the car. I struggle to see how it would have been fine for 8k miles if there'd been a problem with the work, and for oil to be leaking from 2 places suggests a common cause (e.g. blocked breathers) not related to the work carried out, but that's just my gut feeling based on your description.

mistakes may or may not have been made, either way the op has still had a massive favour for the money paid it seems to me....

....not the best way to repay that favour perhaps? ....on the face of it anyway.

I'm quite sure even if the problems where rectified at top prices conciderable savings have still been made.

A bit harsh imo.

When was the leakage noticed?  8K miles is a fair way down the road and, if leakage as bad as OP says, would be noticed very quickly.

8k miles equates to 3 oil changes if the advice on here is taken up.  If left to run that 8k miles on existing oil and short journeys etc then breathers can and do get blocked causing overpressure of the heads etc, particularly if the engine has done a fair few miles and there is substantial blowby.

Would add that if fitting 3 litre cams at the same time then, if it were me, I would be releasing those extra horses whenever possible.  If thats not done with care (working a cold engine hard etc) then your problems can be self inficted to a greater extent.

8k miles and several months is, to my personal mind, outwith any 'warranty' on a mates rates basis.  As others have said, if you want a 12 month unlimited warranty, go main dealer and pay the rate.

All said and done, I would counsel that OP waits for a response from EP before getting their dander up, as we say up this way.  OP has chosen to go public and the OOF public only has one side of the matter.  Too many years of listening to both sides of a story have educated me to the fact that the truth lies somewhere between both....

I suggest that public conjecture and lynch mob type replies are worthless without a response from EP.

i dont think you have been very fair to Pete doing this when its took you 7 months to inform him of the problem and only waited a week for a response from him

never expect warranty from a mobile mechanic..

or backstreet garages.. anyway they do the work for few bucks..

if you want warranty both on parts and work done, you know where the services are ..

I'm also facing a similiar dilemma for some jobs here, even the service prices less than half there..

as we all know cambelt changes, engine rebuilds are risky jobs which can end up with another rebuild.. for that reason I prefer services..and here is my experience , the last time I changed the cambelt , the set was faulty..  :(

which one mechanic friend (has a shop and can already change but prefer not to) and I opened it after suspicion and see the problem..  and after some debate with service, they accept and changed from warranty.. after the second set, some time later cambelt was again loose, again they solve the problem but this time dont change it (normal)
and after, again become loose >:(

so even service warranty wont work properly as expected..

I've never used EP however he appears to have an excellent reputation in these pages. I've used one of the other forum mechanics however, and my warranty was to watch everything he did - which he invited me to do - and seeing the precision and care that he took over my car, torquing every single nut and double checking as he went along, I was happy in the knowledge that it something did go wrong a few months down the line, it would not be down to his endeavours  :y
As the others say, if you want the full warranty, you need to be paying Mr. Dealer :y

I don't want to get into the middle of this, so this is more of an intervention!

Elite Pete is very competant but is very busy at the moment, as am I and I'd stake my reputation alongside Petes! Just bring it to me and I'll help you sort it on Pete's behalf. No cost at all to you! :y
