Focus TDci woes

2004, TDci (115) with 56k

Ok, a couple of weeks ago we had the glo-plugs changed as they were all u/s - now starts 1st time on the button in the cold.

A few days ago it started squealing when the engine was under load & the Focus forum guys sugested that the aux belt may have stretched. Easing off the throttle cures the problem - but you can only accellerate really gently before the onset of the squeaking. Does it in all but 1st & reverse & at all speeds. Loading the elctrics with lights/heated screens etc makes no difference so I dont think it's the alternator.

I had the aux belt replaced by a trusted mechanic but the problem is still there.  :(

The belt had stretched a bit with age - but not excessively with the mech reporting that the tensioner/iders also appeared to be in good condition.

The problem only seems to come on once the engine has warmed up.

So, any comments welcomed.

TIA - Rob

does it do it with the aircon switched off?

I know the clutchplates can squeel on the compressor if dry or any corrosion from lack of use.

Good question - I'll give it a try & see, but the point is that it's doing it with the a/c switched OFF so would that prove anything?

well if it does it when the car is not moving, then it kind of excludes drivetrain, unless its a thrust bearing, more inclined to think a tensioner ?(aux or cambelt) or the a/c compressor

Water pump (impeller or bearing/s) or perhaps a power steering pump or a vacuum pump bearing? :-?

I have heard injection pumps making some `orrible noises in the past, too! :-/

Such noises can be tricky to identify: my Disco`s serpentine belt idler/tensioner pulley made a very peculiar 'flock of budgies' sound (common on the 300 tdi Discovery), simply fixed with a 'precise realignment wedge' (a penny) behind the tensioner bracket. ;)

Problem solved  :y

Turned out to be one of the large Jubilee clips joining the air pipes for the turbo charger not being fully tight. It was removed to do the glo-plugs & not fully tightened up again  :-X

The screech was obviously the turbo either blowing or sucking air and nothing to do the with aux-belt at all  :-/

Hey ho, that's life
