Anyone got a 2.5TD Auto???
« on: 16 December 2010, 20:43:56 »

What sort of MPG are you getting, particularly around town?
Are they very slow, say compared to a  4 pot petrol?

Thanks :y

Mines a manual so knock off about 10% for an auto and I don't hang about either...

This time of year 23/24mpg round town
Summertime 28/29mpg round town
High 40's on a long motorway cruise

They'll be faster than the 2.0/2.2 :y

Thanks for that, not really any better than my 2.2 then, other than on a long run which I can get high 30 anyway and do not do many.. :y
Just noticed, while browsing last night one for sale not far away and thought about chopping in the estate :-/ :-/

The auto's MPG plummets around town. Massively worse than the manual TDs.

I used to average low to mid thirties most of the time - combined dual carriageway and town driving. That was gunning it everywhere, but it was chipped.  Obviously, on a run, that would go up.  But I reckon I struggled to get low twenties around town.

Have an auto TD, and average 25-27 round town, and 35-37 on a long run. (Non chipped, as still have an AR25 gearbox)

Hope this helps..

I have had my 2.5TD auto Estate for 12 years now. I get 26 locally, and up to 35 on long runs. It is chipped and is certainly quick enough for me. It surprises most pax when I use sport to overtake and give it some. Still on an AR25 box 30K after chipping. I can't speak to a four pot, never having driven one.

I've got The Boys old one and im getting late 20's around town and if I go on a bit of a run it usually returns up to 51 mpg. Being chipped it aint slow either and would probably eat a 2.0/2.2 for breakfast off the lights but is pretty useless above 80mph.

Is that mpg figure empirical or off the computer? I can only get a genuine 35 on a run.

Markseth's former 2.5TD Auto Estate was a real guzzler when being used locally around these parts.

You got me, that is off the computer so is probably wildly inaccurate. I have done a brim tank mpg test over approx 300 miles in the past and got 42mpg. not too bad for a six cylinder.

Very impressed. I cruise on Mways at 80 and best I can get is 35 on a run. Reckon I need a different chip. Mind you this one does light it up when rquired. ;D ;D ;D

When I  had mine, on the way to work (4 miles straight across town centre between 8:30-9:00am) It would do about 22 mpg.

On a trip to SLady bitshorpe (from York) its average was 40mpg - That was taking it steady untill I went the wrong way on the M62! and then gave it a foot full to make up for lost time!

If I put cruise control on at 50mph, it would do 50mpg!  :y (only down side, is who wants to sit at 50 everywhere!)

I would have another 2.5TD, however I wasn't too keen on the Diesel / Auto combo. Would be tempted to try a manual Derv though.

Maybe its me, but I always felt the Diesel auto was VERY slow from a standstill. Once they are moving (ie faster than 10mph) then it was fine!

If I wanted to set off in a smallish gap, I felt that I had to press the throttle a second before I 'ACTUALLY' wanted to set off.  ::)

Which is why I chipped mine. :y

Totally agree about the delay, you do find yourself looking at the other set of traffic lights and watching for them to go red so you have a bit of a head start ;D

But once that initial delay is gone, it really does pull pretty hard.

My dad had a few Audi 100's in the 80's and they had exactly the same problem and I thought that was the norm till I tried a neighbours Volvo 740 Turbo Intercooler which picked up like a scalded cat!!
