Tyres again!! and not a popcorn reqd issue.
« on: 14 January 2011, 18:52:53 »

On Wed I hit a frost damage pothole on the crown of the road and finished up with the front offside tyre written off. It has a 3" bulge in the outer wall a proper sickener, but now comes the real stinger it turns out I cannot get a Goodyear Eagle F1 tyre replacement as there is not one anywhere in the country I've tried all the obvious places same answer their 'on back order can't give a date' someone said reason is a chemical shortage. These tyres have been on 9 months and have performed very well on miggy. I've calculated there's about another 4 months on the rears and a yr+ on the fronts (not takeing in to account the lousy bulge)My plan was to replace the 2 rears when needed. It now looks as if my only way through is to now replace all 4 with any alternative make from a well known national supplier, as they offer a repair and replacement warranty with some protection against pothole damage etc. It works on tread depth:-6mm=free replacement. over4mm to 6mm=65%disc. 2mm to 4mm=35%. below 2mm no disc. This it would seem for a premium cost of 12.99 I think it could be a good thing as the pothole situation can only get worse, and also puncture repair, any wheel balancing needed, and any other tyre damage is covered, obviously only if the tyre is supplied by the warranty provider.Just thought I'd post up about this had I known about it 9 months ago I think my present tyre problem would be easier, and certainly not as expensive

Chris never saw the pothole but heard the impact bang and in fact travelled a further 120mls 25 of them on A64 dual carriageway with cruise control at 75. Miggy's still Ok (no vibration etc) so thought I'd no cause to worry I didn't spot the damage untill next day at the petrol pumps tanking up and as already said it's 3"wide by 1" high and located about 1"above the wheel rim of course I'll have the wheel checked out

I like to keep the same tyre across an axle if possible, and similar tread depth.

I'm not so worried about different tyres between front and back.  Esp if cost is an issue.

I try not to let my tread get too low - I place an awful lot of confidence in my tyres, and their ability to turn and stop on demand in all weathers...

...now, who's selling the popcorn....

iirc, you tow a van as well, so I'd be inclined to put the newer tyres on the rear...

You have 18's don't you Cliffo? Tyres in those sizes ain't cheap are they, insurance makes sense for that money, are there many get out clauses?

And what did you fit in the end?

Chris,Haveing 4 Michelin ps3 Sports 235 40 R18 fitted on Monday, their a new design with rim protectors. The tyre care warranty lasts for 3 yrs, you get free roadside repair, or replacement if damaged beyond repair, and free balancing whenever required, this cover will be usefull to me as I'm going to do a lpg conversion shortly, and will be haveing a torodial lpg tank in the spare wheel well,I suppose you'll be wondering about cost,"ain't cheap" in your terms is putting it mildly,bl***y abortive is nearer the mark,700.00.+ insurance is the best I can do, Michelin were always the dearest but Ive aways had them up to the Goodyears, they never let me down and they seem to be a quiet tyre, and now these ones have rim protection to help the alloys I couldn't resist

Could always leave the spare in the boot and leave it at home only when fully loaded? It also fits in the rear footwell easy enough if the boot is full and no rear passenger. My spare was fairly clean but could wrap it shrink wrap or something.

But I'll look into the insurance :y, punctures are common round here for some reason >:(

Chris,I didn't realise you were looking at tyre insurance possibilities, you need to know my supplier is ATS, and it was at their suggestion when I was haveing a rant at the situation that I was in, (unable to simply replace the tyre like for like)due to a manufacturing problem, that they gave me the brochure of their "Tyre Roadside Assistance Repair and Replacement Warranty"You mentioned get out clauses in your previous post, it's possible that this arrangement would come under the Sale Of Goods Act,I wouldn't know I'm no legal expert, seems that for a sliding scale of payment, (new tyre value) and wear left in the damaged tyre, a new replacement is given. In my present situation I would have qualified for 65% disc. at a cost of 12.99 for 3 yrs cover, done my best to explain, its complicated, hope I've helped :y

I have Michelin PS3 on my Elite. They were on there when I bought it in the summer, as they probably wouldn't have been my first choice.  The tread is fairly worn, so I can't really pass judgement or compare properly.  For the right price, I am not entirely against having them again on that car - though as you know, finding them at the right price is the problem ;D

The reason I replied, is I too always pick tyres with rim protectors on. Its not foolproof, but does help :y
