LPG or Diesel?????
« on: 11 January 2011, 10:34:38 »

Hi guys
Newbie here.  I'm looking at buying my first Omega but am particularly looking at fuel economy so was considering a lpg conversion.  This seem to be relatively thin on the ground from my search so might be tempted by a diesel.  I've only ever had experience with petrol omegas, so are the diesels any good?

I've got a 2.2 diesel and a 2.5 diesel and I prefer the 2.5, its much more refined than the 2.2. As for Petrol over diesel, if its performance you want then go for a 3.0 but economy then the diesel is better for you, I drive like miss daisey most of the time but my chipped diesel can pick her feet up when asked too so I think i've got a happy compromise ;)

Hi Pete,
What sort of economy do you hit in the 2.5?  Is there much engine noise? I had a corsa TD as a youth and it sounded like a tractor!

It depends really, I use mine for towing alot but I picked an Omega up from not far from Ayr in Scotland towing a dolly there and an Omega back. I filled the tank before I left and the car did the 500 mile round trip on one tank. The 2.5 diesel is very quiet and smooth but get a manual box if your going to chip it the auto boxes self distruct when you chip them ;)

What sort of performance hike do you get from chipping it pete? and how much would it cost? Is there any downsides in terms of economy, insurance costs, engine life etc?

I think what the 2.2DTi really lacks against the 2.5TD (or 2.5DTi if you live in the correct country!) is the refinment that you can only get with having six cylinders.

Also noticed that a 2.2DTi seems take a good few miles to get up to operating temperature and quieten down a little.

Thast down to the efficiency of burn

I have a 2.6 running on LPG. I would say it depends on the amount of miles you are doing. For example I'm doing 35k+ and running on gas. The recent rises are stinging and now slope in favour of diesel. If the price drops then it'll be back to normal.

I wouldn't pay to have a conversion done unless you can do it DIY.

This is the key, as it keeps costs down. You also know its done right!

here in this country , muppet installers all around (except some really expensive good mechanics which is rare) , I dont expect any quality conversion if I dont rob any bank.. a second hand diseasel will be more safe imo..

Not necessarily... There are some very good conversions out there ;) :y

If you have one in mind and there are some good pictures I'm sure some of us with some experience could cast an eye over them :y

Equally, if close enough, perhaps have a look with you. We can also give you some questions to ask if you like :y
