Project Veccy is safely home...
« on: 09 July 2007, 02:17:37 »

Tonight I picked up my new project, from Taxi Driver in Swindon. It is a 2001, 51 registered Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 16v, with a factory fitted LPG conversion. High mileage, but it's been well serviced and looked after. Apart from a couple of shopping trolley dings, the bodywork is unmarked. Interios is also very clean. It was really nice to drive, gearbox and clutch are exceptionally smooth.. the gearchange even puts the Elite Estate to shame! Needs a couple of bits sorted, inc centralising steering wheel, but nothing I can see that's too major.

The problem with it - well, it's missfiring. Under low revs it misfires badly - however on the motorway it's a lot better. I drove it 90 miles this evening, 80 of which were on the M4.

Td has changed the coil pack and plugs, and it was still missing. Having taken it to his garage, he was informed that there's no compression on cylinder number 3, indicating a valve problem.

Whilst I fully trust TD in what he and his garage has done - I am going to be methodical and start from the beginning, for the troubleshooting process.

This will involve:

1) Compression test
2) Find which Pot isn't firing, and renew the HT lead.

Observations

1) It runs a lot smoother, and the misfire is not as apparant, when running on LPG compared to petrol. I'd have thought if compression was down, it would be WORSE on LPG than petrol, as LPG requires a higher compression ratio?

2) Running on either fuel, it tends not to misfire towards the higer end of the rev-scale, but again it's even better on LPG.

There is a live fault code, for the petrol injector for no 3. When driving, I knocked the dash due to a little bulb gone.. and the EML popped on! It's a pic of an engine anyway, so I presume EML, not emissions?

Anyway, enough rambling, I will get out there tomorrow, and do some investigating, and post up the results. My money will still be on a head rebuild, but if it comes to that, at least I'll be guaranteed that's the problem...

Big thanks to Taxi Driver, for supplying my latest project... I'm extremely pleased with it :y :y

More updates to follow, inc pics...

Ahh.. cheers Dave!

NO HT LEADS! Bloody modern cars - how does one test for spark getting to the plug then!  >:(  ;D

Unfortunately, I just have to take SWMBO out for a fried breakfast, and then I'll be able to have a play!!

Using tech 2 and test plugs.....i.e. the only reliable method for testing any DIS/coil pack modules.
