Seems fairly reasonable to me?  Can save a fair bit by getting a trade card and doing the basic service items yourself, and there are members on here that would be happy for your custom at a more than fair rate.

I dare say the equivalent E39 5 series, E class or A6 would have cost more to maintain,

Hello Paul no matter what car you drive alot of that is what you would have to spend to keep it on the road. Well thats how i justified it for so long anyway.

I would say I've easily spent that amount in the 4 years I've had mine. Last year alone I spent close to £1000 in one go for cam belt/tensioner replacement, new radiator and full service with plugs.

That may look a lot but it's 'only' £800 a year, if you remove tyres and servicing which you need on any car it will come down even more.

Ive just purchased a TD4 Freelander low mileage 02 plate to replace my Omega due to fuel cost, to and from work was costing me £65 a week and I'm not heavy footed,

But have just had to spend £540 on a new viscous coupling for the Freelander, love my Omega but hated it in snow conditions, will be sad to see her go

Only 4 oil changes in 4 years

Done about 10k only.yes only 4 oil relied on garage to tell me when needed.

For comparison, I have spent £2,300 for 12k in 23 months. That's based mostly on diy/trade club and pre loved parts where suitable.

Notable highlights are 4 new tyres, 2 new dispacks, new hg's (plus belts, cam cover gaskets etc) and 4 oil/filter changes.

Bought my current car on 1st January 2010. Now approx 14 months and 3500 miles later, it has cost me:

2 oil and filter changes
Ummm road tax, insurance and an MOT. I have so far purchased nothing for it, no repair bills, zilch.

I have purchased an elite cloth interior for it but that is my choice and was not needed and it only cost £50.

I did however buy the car in good condition with a comprehensive service history, backed up by the previous owners own written history. Which proves to me the benefit of buying the right car, not having to have the right badge or that exact engine.

My car will need some tyres soon, but that could be the same for any car.

Agreed... When I got mine I knew I was going to need to do the work to get it up to scratch. Since then it's only had service items, apart from the LPG (I count wishbones and a service item on Omegas )
