Rear Donut Bushes
« on: 25 February 2011, 07:47:12 »

Well yesterday I plucked up the courage and ventured under the car to replace the subframe bushes which have been sat in their boxes now for several months.

Wasn,t as bad a job as had expected or read..yes they are nasty to remove but a large screw driver and small prise bar made the job better and eventually got them out.

Had alot of grief getting the first new one in as couldnt get the long bolt into the captive nut..then after moving the trailing arm around a bit on the jack all went to plan .Found quite a good way of pressing the new bush in with a small trolley jack and a square peice of 2 inch wood.Stood the wood on the end platform of trolley jack and positioned it against one of the three cut outs, and then applied slow constant pressure on each in turn then did the final push with the fixing plate in reverse position as per guide.

Did expect condition of those removed to be much worse,as all they had was a small amount of splitting from centre metal tube and very light marks in the base rubber.Unsure if they were originals from new but they did have a VX part number but couldn,t see the date dial as had split it on removal.

Regarding orientaion of the bushes. The existing O/S was fitted as per the guide with the 2 slots running parrallel with the diff and the single wedge facing front of car.N/S was fitted different with the 2 cut outs facing front and back of car and the wedge point facing towards the middle of car.

Both new ones replaced as per guide or as my existing O/S was. When I pulled car off driveway last night there was NO creaking from the back which has been there ever since I have had the car,so at this stage I must say my work was a success although I assume I will also notice an improvement in ride quality aswell.

Thanks to everyone who has answered my endless stream of questions on this subject and for the kind advise given by those more experienced as without them I am unsure I would have attempted the job let alone completed it succesfully in less than 5 hours both sides.Pretty good for a "donut virgin" !!!

Thanks guys...great forum.
