Just heard on radio that if you own a car and it is not insured you will be fined £100 if the fine is not paid and you still do t hold insurance the take the car!so what happens if lime me you own 2 cars one of which is of the road being repaired what happens?!?this country is goin mad!

the law will require that the uninsured car needs to be declared sorn

the mv6 i have is currently off the road uninsured but it's taxed til the end of may, if i get a letter from DVLA i'll have to sorn it, but i'm hoping i'm low down on the list!

the way I read it says that if the car is sorned and off the road then its ok not to have it insured

I dont beleive any car should be allowed to be parked on the road without tax and 3rd party insurance.

So really struggle to see an issue, apart from a tiny bit more red tape, of 2 mins to sorn your car online.

I dont beleive any car should be allowed to be parked on the road without tax and 3rd party insurance.

So really struggle to see an issue, apart from a tiny bit more red tape, of 2 mins to sorn your car online.

Scenario, your beloved Mig breaks down and needs a new engine. It is going to be off the road for a couple of weeks, so you have to arrange other transport which involves you transfering your insurance to the alternative vehicle. Now you are already wound up with the Mig breaking down and making sure your new transport is insured you forget to delare sorn on your Mig which I hasten to add involves sending the disc back to dvla, it is not just done online.
One week later you recieve your fine through the post, Makes you even happier eh.

This is just the latest way to fine the motorist for nothing. Yes of course as untaxed/unisured car should not be on the road. But I am sure there are already laws to cover this. It is just another hoop to jump through.

Another scenario, you buy your new car before selling the old one and transfer your insurance to new car so at be able to tax it and drive it legally, your very happy with your new car and the old one is just sat in the drive with say 6 months MOT and Tax. Not anymore, you will not be able to sell this car with tax because you had to declare SORN and send the tax disc back because the car is no longer insured.

Agreed. It's another hoop to jump through for those who abide by the law, whereas the authorities can't be bothered to use the extensive tools already available to them to bring the real offenders to justice.

The "inconvenience" to the very few who suffer a breakdown and require a replacement car, the highly complex arrangements therof so perplexing them that they forget to SORN the vehicle ... is well worth it IMHO if it stops just one uninsured driver crippling a child for life.

Once again .. some want the laws as long as it does not affect them.

IMHO the cars should be crushed within 7 days if not taxed & insured or SORNed.

Tax and Insurance are a requirement for all ... end of.

A bit black & white there I think Nige. Under the new rules I'm breaking the law with my bike sat in my garage with tax but no insurance or MOT. It's not going anywhere near the road but why should I have to jump through the hoop of SORNing it? Just more red tape to strangle those who already obey the rules of the road. It won't make any difference to those cars already on the road un-taxed & un-insured and won't do anything to prevent the hypothetical kid from being crippled for life.

I particularly liked the way the BBC used the example of a bloke who was driving around with no insurance as a counterpoint to their article (or was it their argument for it? I'm not sure) .. which is a bit different to the intent (or at least the wording) of this law, surely.

If you're already driving around without insurance, you're probably doing so without tax and you probably don't really care if the car you stole & cloned gets crushed.. </gross generalisation>

Yep, and, even if your car is taxed, pass the VRN through the police national computer and "BING!" no insurance. So why are there uninsured cars on the road?

.. and why will this measure make the slightest difference?

It's an attempt to Police "on the cheap" by Royal Mail instead of traffic plod, and you'll never catch the criminals who cause real harm that way.

my only issue with this is that i'm technically supposed to sorn the mv6 while its up for sale and not in use

harder to sell without tax, and impossible to tax without insurance!

if i get the letter telling me i must sorn it, i'll withdraw it from sale and sell the bora since it's being used everyday so its taxed and insured, then transfer insurance to the mv6 and tax it
