Well, completely out of the blue I fear I may soon be an ex Omega owner im afraid people.


As much as I have loved the old girl (and I really have) I must face facts and admit it isnt ideal for someone with as many kiddywinkles as I have (4 plus a grandson). The boot is surprisingly useless with the Bose tray hanging under the parcel shelf and I have to take two cars to see my parents in Hemel (which can happen 6+ times a year).

So when I noticed something in my local garage the other day I stopped for a closer look, and must say, it seems perfect for my needs.

Now please go easy on me here as im sure this wont be everyones cup of tea, but what I am probably changing to is a Toyota Lucida 2.2 TD 1994/L. This is the import version of the Previa (narrower than the English car). This one has all its bills since it was imported (in 2005) and seems to have been really well cared for. It hasnt got half the toys the Megga has, but it has 7 seats and a HUGE boot (when the seats are down). I have done a bit of homework and know these suffer with head gaskets and I will check this tomorrow as best I can and give it a decent (hour at least) test drive.

Something I have noticed about these cars is they seem to have finished depreciating. I looked into these 3 years ago when I ended up getting swmbo a Volvo 940 estate and they were literally the same price then as they are now.

The best part about it is the price. He wants £995 for it which is about bang on for the year and condition (very very good for its age) but he has also offered me £750 for the Omega, thats just £50 depreciation in nearly 2 years of motoring!!! I reckon with a bit of haggling I can get him to a price to change of £150-£200.

So, thats my news for tonight, i'll let you know how I get on tomorrow.

My dad had two English Previas in the 90's and he loved them too, they really were huge and I do love the space they had!!!!

S il be totally honest with you and i was at one point looking at them due to the fact you can change the seeting plan in the back as well and they had curtains ,being auto was a bonuscos i hate sitting in traffic up and down on the clutch,the price was right theyre now cheap enough but something stopped me getting one
i finished up getting a sharan 1.9td red i and what a shock it was a rocket(lets say 120mph on the m62 once and i watched it get there from 90 to 120 in seconds)thats why i got shut even though it did average 48mpg,i traded a v6 mig in for a disco and traded the disco for the sharan and not long after traded the sharan for the last mig i had but now i have a isuzu bighorn 3.1td automatic seven seats so its an all rounder and im well pleased with it

All you need is a trailer and an Omega.

PS the extra child will have to be given up for adoption unless it is young enough to travel in the trailer.

It is TB's old girl, so yep, your probably right!!!! Not sure if the Lucida will be any better on fuel, im guessing not, but it should hopefully be close.

having 4 kids myself (thankfully grown up now youngest is 15) i have owned,previa 2.4gx,lucida 2.2td,galaxy 2.3 auto,citroen c8 2.0hdi....i have had on hire ..fiat multipla,espace 2.2td,kia sedona 2.9td,zafira td..and i worked for a company that had galaxy old shape auto diesels then replaced em with manual new shapes....i would say out of all the people carriers i have drove the lucida was the worst..it was slow and troublesome...the petrol one was entirely different and did somewhere in the region of 50k + miles with only a split header tank ..if you can live with 20 mpg i'd get a 2.4 petrol...galaxys are great my 2.3 was a good motor but again only did about 20-22 mpg...the diesel auto's all had gearbox problems..and the later new shape one's i think suffer from injector failure as go most mondeo's

the 2.2lucida is very very prone to blowing headgaskets,
autoboxes dont last and for a diesel the fuel consumption is terrible!!! plus they are extremely slow and noisy on a lng jorney, insurance wll have to be a specialist as theyare and import, personally i would steer clear but i hope you get a good one mate!!
