REG TRANSFERS
« on: 07 March 2011, 17:03:37 »

Hi All,

Anyone know about Reg Transfers ?

I am looking to transfer a private plate off my Mondeo, and put it on my Omega.

Problem is that DVLA say you cant transfer a plate after you have sold the vehicle, as the new owner can keep the plate.

I am selling the Mondeo and hope to transfer the plate onto the Omega at the same time, as i notify change of ownership of the Mondeo.
All the forms appear to allow that. (Transfer at time of sale) and deal is agreed with buyer, but i,m not convinced they will let me do both, change of owner and plate transfer at the same  time.
Seems like a pretty standard thing to do, ...but it is the DVLA

Anyone know if i might get hassle at local DVLA office when i take up both Log Books, and attempt the transfer...or will i be o.k.

I dont see why there should be any hassle, but i would prefer to find out before i am confronted with a problem,

You can notify the change of keeper at the same time as doing the cherished transfer but I suggest that you go in personally to your local vehicle licencing office and do it personally, not by post.

If you do it in person then you do the transfer first then the change of keepr but anytime I have had to do such a thing, the staff are switched on enough to know whats happening.

And yes, they are correct in that you cannot transfer the number after the vehicle is sold.  But the new keeper can put it onto retention, if they agree, and put your name as nominee so that you can then use the number on your car.  Kinda hinges on the new keeper playing ball though....

Incedentally, I go to the LVLO in Dundee regularly and its no great biggie to them in there.  If you are doing it face to face then they will do the new MOT there and then as well as issue the replacement tax disc so that the new keeper can drive away quite legally....  ;)

if you are selling the mondeo anyway why not just do the transfer now and then its just a straight forward ownership swap when the deal is done, when I last swapped mine the paperwork was back in a few days :y

once the new keeper has signed the document then technically the plate is his

Thanks for the quick replies guys,

Hotel..
I am in Stirling, so Dundee or Edinburgh  are about the same for me..(i usually use DVLA / LVLO Edinburgh )
Will they give the mondeo a new number when i,m at the counter ?

Henryd...
I  didnt want to lose the docs for 6 weeks, ( which is what i thought )  else i would have done that ... but as ive  basically sold the car.. then  it shouldnt matter.

If i can do the transfer first, then  notify change of owner at the same counter then i,m good ...i think ..lol

Just remembered, sorry.  Its a straight turnaround only if the number is on a retention certificate, otherwise its 5 working days.  At this time of year with the new registrations, that gets stretched a tad....

Yes, they should.  You might also get the new keepers part of the V5c back away with you with a pen added replacement registration mark on it.  You can only go in and try.  Worst case, they will keep them and send them out to you ASAP.  Should be no need to go twice....
