Ok, GF Rover 25, clutch went, she limpted it home in 2nd gear and without talking to me got someone on board to repair it. She then had to move it, I suggested 3 young lads wlaking by to push as she stated it whilst in 2nd, She refused and started and drove the car to the next road for repair where it suddendly stopped with an allmighty bang and everyone thoght a bomb had gone off.
I priced 2 clutches 1st at £95 the 2nd was an LUK @£120
Garage quoted £310 all in using an LUK kit but said he was paying £95 for that (Trade)
her mate proptly bought a clutch kit for £65, then started to strip off the box to fit the new clutch.
This is what the muppet proceeded to damage. Using a hammer and chisel whilst removing the battery he put the chisel through the battery (Hadnt got the right size spanner)
Seems the allmighty bang was the clutcth fork getting caught - whilst removing the pin to take the fork off he smahed a piece out of the gearbox where the pin is locked. Then on refitting the clutch struggled with the gearbox and knackered a cv joint on one occasian and split a boot on annother.
The result when all put together was that the clutch still grates.
So
Is it a cheap clutch problem?
Can the plate or release bearing be fitted the wrong way - think he was advised the plate was in wrong so took it out and checked but seeming was in correct.
Or is it a case of, wrong clutch for this gearbox - When a replacement box was sourced the dismanters asked if it was the ford or the rover type box? this should not be a problem with the replacemnrt box as they took the old one to show the dismantlers. But could that be an issue if the wrong cluth has been supplied.?
