Friend asking advise

One of my friends just rang re. a problem he is having with his Volvo V50 diesel. He says that there is a weird clattering coming from the gearbox area of his car which when the clutch is pressed gets worse. Clutch seems to work fine no loss of drive but can feel feedback through the clutch pedal. Its only done 27k on a 56 plate and I know he looks after it well & doesn't thrash it around. Sounds to me to be a premature DMF failure possibly??? Anyone have any thoughts?

You normally get vibration when the engine is running if the DMF is on its way.

Yep he's getting that aswell, he's a bit cheesed off too as its just out of warranty. I know stealers oops! Dealers want about £1000 for changing them.

Just had a google and it seems to be common with prices of £1500 for a replacement DMF  :o

f it's only just out of warranty the Dealer/Volvo UK may do something as a good will gesture ::)

Yeouch!!!!! Just been looking too at the Volvo forums, doesn't look too good for him. He's gonna take it to Volvo  :o in the mornin for them to diagnose, Hmm! but as I told him till ya strip it down you aint gonna know for certain. Hope its not for his sake, might get paramedics on standby for him :'( :'(
4 yrs old with 27k on the clock, you'd expect a little more service though wouldn't ya?

Well, my mate is just about over the shock from the stealers, They confirmed it was the DMF and want £847 to have it replaced, included in that is a 30% discount from Volvo.  :o :o :o Robbin so & sos. Apparantly its a well known issue on the V50D.

is'nt the v50 diesel engine the same as the one in a focus tdci  :-/

It seems to be a fairly common problem these days with DMF failures. A lad at work has a 3 series BMW with a duff DMF too, he's been quoted £850 to get it fixed. What was wrong with a sprung clutch plate instead of a sprung flywheel?
I'll stick to my 'proper' auto!  ;) ;)

its seems all dmf's are more trouble than there worth.ive done about 20 rwd transits where out a solid flywheel and clutch in them.it works out a hell of alot cheeper to.paul

Oh dear, makes fixing an Omega look remarkably cheap .  :y

According to a volvo forum, the DMF itself costs around £300,

Also some people fit a standard single mass flywheel, should last longer
