I am in the market to buy for the first time in ages and need advice. I am wonder whether its worth going for a TD over a V6. Running costs and fuel consumption are the main issues, its coming down to is the diesel engine worth it against the purr of a V6.

Depends on your annual mileage. If you're doing under 10k a year then I'd bite the bullet and go for the biggest V6 you can get your hands on. Many now have gas conversions anyway so they'll be a winner for you.

Diesel LPG conversions are not for economy, they are for power.

normally I wouldn't, but time is of the essence on this one and I have omega-less for a year and a half and the decision must be the right one

Proven figures for our TD are:
Locally: 33 mpg 
Cross-country (giving it the beans with Guffers LPG tank and other OOF cargo on board): 40 mpg
Steady 70mph-plus motorway cruising: 43 mpg
Towing the caravan: 22 mpg

Without doubt, the best car that we've ever owned!



As an aside, our former 2.0 Auto always managed 23 mpg whilst towing the 'van.
So the TD's a bit disappointing on this front

I reckon the TD needs to have a manual box to return usable economy.

My old TD Elite auto did around 33mpg as an average.

2.6 manual - I have a 2003 2.6 Elite manual saloon. I've done 225 miles in it in the last 2 days, and that's used exactly 1/2 a tank. That's a mixture of driving but with mostly steady driving.
Although, of course I can get through £40 a day round town and with quick driving.
3.2 auto driven steadily does still drink the fuel, but I've found the 3.2 manual is very similiar to the 2.6 manual, fairly good on fuel.
Have you considered a 2.2 DTI?

Seeing those figures for the Sethsmate diesel I'm not sure diesel is the good option.
Ok mine is missing 2 cilinders as some members would say, but on lpg when pence per mile is taken into account my mig is consuming less that fatheers skoda Octavia 1.9tdi (and that really is cheap to drive)

2.2 DTi here, been very please with a reliable 40mpg in pretty mixed driving.
Downsides?
Definitely not quick - but nor is a V6 if you are driving for economy, and I'm sure it's less refined than a petrol engine especially a V6.
As has been said if you are not doing lots of miles then it's a buyer's market for a nice V6, but I would always be going for the diesel.

Yes, got a mate with a diesel VRS (Skoda). Put gas, bigger turbo, nitrous, water injection and chipped it. Goes pretty well and still gets impressive mpg when his foot isn't glued to the floor.

I'd still go for the V6 though!
