Never Ever buy a freelander without checking the viscous coupling in the rear prop, especially on the series 1. I talk from bitter experience.

Lol, well its well documented on my thoughts on land Rovers....there great off road and totaly shite on them! (plus I spend to much of my time having to fix and weld the dam things)

Ah yes, proper British made vehicles that come pre-loaded with a good dose of rust from the factory!

This was owned by a friend of mine:

(Scrapped as beyond economical repair at that point - every body mounting point had rusted through more or less.. that and the 8 bent pushrods didn't help it's cause!)

Don't know what that is ::) :-[ but it is not a Series which if I get my way I will get..... :y  Currently in a quandary what to do about cars for me and swmbo.... ::) ::) ::)

correct me here isn't the freelander a very unreliable wanabee disco for gays with a rover 75 engine ??   get a disco diesel proper 4x4,

  :y :y :y

I take it you are referring to the 1.8 petrol unit.....
Which by all accounts is the only freelander to avoid.......

The diesels were fine, both the L series one from the 200/400/600 and the TD Landrover series

Actually.. not a clue which model it is myself either, as I'm not 'up' on LRs etc :) One of these, if it helps:

Growing up in rural Yorkshire everyone had a LandRover of some description (Series, Disco, etc) .. always kinda fancied one myself, at least a 'proper' LR would be good fun in the snow  ;D

(As you can tell by the tyres on the one towing the trailer, they actually use these things for their intended purpose - up to the frame rails in mud every weekend  ;D)

" Fun and winter use " was the original criteria.
If that includes serious off roading go for a Discovery but DON'T write off the Freelander as too many do.
I listened to people badmouth them at the least opportunity but I've had one for 8 years now and it's no better or worse than any car on this site and others.
It's a 1,8 petrol and yes it's had the HG done as a preventative measure ( properly with all correct upgrades ) but how many Omegas on here have had theirs done too ( and I bet it's a lot easier to do than a X30XE )  The MLS gasket is definatly a success and fitted correctly with other advised mods gives the car a much better reliabilty record.
VCU changed at 70 K which is the rule of thumb on them .
My wife drives has driven down a 3 mile rough quarry road to work in it 5 days a week for 4 years and it has only required drop links , ARB and diff bushes ( so's my Omega ) .Her boss also uses the road in his  Touareg and Audi 4x4 and those have had much more extensive suspension overhauls in their time than the FL.
We live at the top of a VERY steep tarmac road  and then up another steep gravel drive and right through the winters  snow and ice it just trundles up , and down , every time it's asked to. We also live in the mountains down here in Kerry and it has often been driven over and up muddy fields ,farm tracks and stoney sea shores and never got stuck or given us cause for concern .
The wee car is still immaculate with no rattles or broken parts due to it's harsh life .
And don't think the diesel version is immune to problems there are more threads for them than K series on the three main LR forums.
So it depends what you want from a LR but don't be told the FL is rubbish .....

I used to have a Defender 90 (H plate). Was absolutely brilliant off road and took the hammering of a lifetime but just kept going. Shite on-raod though.

My cousin has the Mk II (I think it is) Freelander - diesel version and it does surprisingly well off-road and is pretty good on it.

My uncle has had a few Discos and apart from the rust issue they were pretty good off-road and OK on it.

A mate's doing up a series III at the moment. Parts are cheap as chips. Seems pretty bullet-proof. Negative-earth which caused me to rethink a bit trying to get the wiring back on but it seems to run OK if a bit basic. Wouldn't want to drive far in it!

A mate at work has a freelander he got it brand new and he likes it...I think but from the stuff he has told me i would'ent have one cold in the winter unless it has the extra heater which you have to buy and then it use's more diesel trying to warm it up....and if you don't have one you have to scrap the inside of the window as well as the outside i could go on but i wont.
